Saturday was a rainy day so I didn't go too far or plan too much. I just went to Westchester and bagged some geocaches, mostly quick ones. The rain did help me with "Mamaroneck Discovery 4" though. This one is right in downtown Mamaroneck. Usually, that location would be way too busy but with the rain, not many people were in the area and I was able to make the grab.

On Sunday, I woke up quite a bit earlier than usual to attend "mmmm even more Donuts?!", a geocaching event at the I-80 Westbound scenic overlook in Columbia. It was worth getting up a little before 6am for donuts, yeah. I was actually a little early so I decided to do a few geocaches along the way. I pulled into the parking area for "HOPES INFORMATION CENTER" and saw BigA800 and Walkin' Ed already there. So we did that cache and two more and then hurried over to the event. The "just one more" syndrome had made us a bit late for the event. :) Fortunately, there were still some donuts left when we got there because Weathernowcast got almost enough for 3 donuts per attendee!

I went off on my own after the event instead of following the group to the tunnels. I did run into Team Tron at "Portland-Columbia Footbridge", however. My plan was to head to Stroudsburg after the event but somehow, I managed to not do any geocaches in Stroudsburg. Instead, I went around the Pocono area to Shawnee, Bushkill, and Paradise Crossing, and finished up with the "Rest n' Peace" series on my way back towards New Jersey. I took a break in the middle to see some well-known tourist attractions in the Poconos. Since I may not be back for a long time, it would be a pity if I didn't take a look at Bushkill Falls, for example.

No eating out for dinner this weekend. I made microwave meatloaf and microwave rice on Saturday and had the leftovers on Sunday.

Friday was a rainy day. I hadn't been to Lehigh Valley in quite a while so there were many new geocaches that were close to parking and doable in the rain. Ran into BillyPilot at a cache site so I wasn't the only one out in the rain. I also tried my hand at some Fren-Z geocaches, knowing that I would fail to find most of those, but I got lucky at his Stockertown cache. I'd been there previously to take a look around but had not felt like turning the whole area over to look for the micro cache. This time, the first thing I picked up was where it was hidden! In the evening, I went to Welcome to . . . (Branchburg NJ) 2009 geocaching event at Moe's back in NJ. By the time I got there, it was near the end of the event but I still had about half an hour to trade travel bugs and eat. I had Billy Barou with pork. They used shredded cheese because they ran out of cheese sauce.

Saturday was a sunny day and warmer than Friday. I went to Western NJ along I-80, crossed over the Delaware River to Portland and Mount Bethel, and finished in Stroudsburg. I saw NJ's Longest Traffic Light, a 3-minute red light on Old Mine Road in the Delaware Water Gap. The traffic light has to be that long because of a stretch of one-lane road next to the mountain. The cache was near the traffic light so I didn't actually have to wait. I just turned the car around, parked, and got the cache. I also stumbled across the Lakota Wolf Preserve. It is behind the campground where the "Camp Sight" geocache is located. Dinner was at Chili's in Parsippany to use this month's coupon. I had the Oldtimer and chips and salsa.

On Sunday, I had planned on doing a mascot gig at Manhattanville College in Westchester. However, the event organizers hadn't supplied parking passes and with no pass and no credentials, I had problems with security at the gate. So I decided to skip the gig and switch to Plan B, which was to go geocaching in Westchester. Yes, it was a disappointment but not a major one because that was a fine day -- sunny and breezy -- to be outdoors. The difficult geocache of the day was supposedly "Little Green Men: Tron, Master of the Bull Ship". Once I found it, I realized the problem. It wasn't placed in a way that most geocachers would expect for that area. It was an area with rock formations but the cache wasn't in the rocks, where I saw most of the signs of searching activity. For a late lunch, I had chicken taco and chicken burrito at Taco Bell in New Rochelle. Wasn't planning on eating at Taco Bell but I used their restroom so I might as well get food. For dinner, I just came home and cooked because I wasn't that far from home.

9968 geocaches found, 32 to go.

Took the day off since it seemed like the only day this week with good weather. I went geocaching in Westchester. The main purpose of this trip is to do a bunch of geocaches in Sprain Ridge Park while parking is still free at that park. They charge a parking fee from Memorial Day to Labor Day, or so I've been told. Sprain Ridge has lots of hills and rocky slopes so it was also a good opportunity to try the replacement boots that Columbia Sportswear sent me. I was done with the 7 geocaches in Sprain Ridge by 2pm so there was plenty of time to go for all the new geocaches in Mamaroneck as well. Total for the day is 23 geocaches.

In the evening, I went to Palisades Center. I had 18 wings at Buffalo Wild Wings. 6 of those were free because of a customer survey coupon. The other 12 were 50 cents each because of "Wingolution Wednesday". Not a bad deal, all in all. I chose the three hottest sauces, Mango Habanero, Wild, and Blazin', and got 6 wings with each sauce. Strangely, Blazin' seemed less hot to me than Wild. Maybe the labels got mixed up.

According to the weather forecast, there was a 90% chance of rain on Saturday. So I planned on doing a bunch of easy geocaches in Westchester. Well, surprise! The day was sunny and 60°F. I still did those easy geocaches but I threw in some bike trail walks and a few hikes in the woods. Park and grabs are fine for quick gratification but those don't really nourish the soul. I had a $5 coupon from my last visit to Johnny Rockets, so I returned to Palisades Center in the evening to have dinner at Johnny Rockets again. This time, I had #12 and fries and a chocolate peanut butter shake. Also had a refill of the fries. I think if they had unlimited garlic fries, that would make them an even match to Red Robin.

Sunday was a rainy day. It was 46°F to 54°F most of the day. There was a geocaching event in Manhattan in the morning, but I decided to skip it because I started a little late and I'd have to rush over to make it in time. One thing about driving in Manhattan is you can't be in a hurry. There is too much traffic and too many traffic lights, and I would think the rain makes it worse. So I just skipped ahead to the Long Island part of my plans for the day. Didn't get to do too many caches after all. I tackled a few walks in the woods, as far as I could go before getting too wet. Of course, there were a few quick ones too.

For dinner, I went to Flushing Chinatown and had nasi lemak and stuffed vegetables Malaysian style. I think this is a repeat of what I had the first time I went to Curry Leaves but these dishes are worth repeating. The curry really hit the spot. This restaurant is family owned and operated, and I still think it is interesting the way they use the dining area as their family living room. They watch TV there, the kids play there, and this evening, they disciplined their kids there. Okay, perhaps doing that in front of customers was a bit over the line. Another observation: Because the sun sets later now and because I tend to geocache all the way to sunset and because it takes an hour and a half to go from East Moriches to Queens, I arrived at Flushing Chinatown at around 9pm. I noticed that many restaurants and stores close at 9pm on Sunday so that will cut down on my choices until Daylight Saving Time ends in the Fall. Two of my usual places are open after 9pm but I'm going to miss the sweet bean curd.

I did a mascot gig with Hi-4 for Maple Sugar Sunday at Stamford Museum. The weather forecast was rather dire on the amount of snow expected on Sunday but I figured there was a good enough chance that the snow wouldn't amount to much, so I didn't opt out of this gig. I began to doubt my hunch when snow started coming down while I went for the Beware of the Dog! and Purchase Pipe geocaches in Westchester on my way to Stamford. Well, guess what? The snow slowed to a few flakes here and there and none of it stuck. So it wasn't a bad day after all.

Our group this time was [livejournal.com profile] jbadger, [livejournal.com profile] jimwolf24, Damian, and I. Our changing area was in the children's activity center building. We took turns going out two at a time in costume. It wasn't a terribly big event but there were still many people who took a chance on the snow and attended the event. There was a paved path all the way around the farm area so I took a walk in costume there and interacted with people and kids along the way. On my second time out, I stayed mostly near the center part of the nature center grounds because the path was wet from ice melt. On my break, I changed out of costume and toured the area as a regular visitor, sampling some popcorn and maple donuts and watching the maple sugaring demonstration. I also took some photos and video.

Our post-gig dinner plans fell through because the Thai restaurant in Greenwich apparently disappeared without a trace some time during the last few years. So we split up. I went with [livejournal.com profile] jbadger to Flushing Chinatown to try some eateries from this New York Times article. I had Hand-pulled Noodles with Mutton at Lanzhou Handmade Noodle at Golden Mall Food Court. This food court, hidden away in the basement of Golden Shopping Mall at the corner of 41st Road and Main St, was an incredibly cramped space subdivided into a dozen or so food vendors. I had to change seats because someone needed to push a stack of boxes down the narrow aisle. I thought the mutton and noodles were okay. The soup had more spices in it than anything you'd find in any run-of-the-mill Chinese place. For dessert, I had cheesecake at Sun Mary Bakery, another place mentioned in the NYT article.

Cloudy with a slight drizzle. 34-37°F. It snowed the night before so I was wondering if I would have any difficulty finding geocaches in Westchester but the snow cover turned out to be only an inch thick at most and even that was melting away as the day went on. Today's set was a mixed bag: a few walks in the woods and some urban cache hides. I made reasonable progress although I hit some bad traffic in New Rochelle and so I did the last two after dusk.

Came back to Park Ridge to do some errands and use a Burger King coupon for dinner. I was wondering why Burger King was the only busy restaurant in town while all the other eateries were quiet when I realized that I was likely not the only person taking advantage of the discounts. In this economy, BK is about as fancy a restaurant as people would go to.

Cloudy. 40 - 45°F. I hadn't been to Dutchess County for about a month but so many new geocaches have popped up in the Beacon area that I was able to make a day of it. One good thing about Thanksgiving Day is all the local roads are quiet. I only encountered traffic delays at the Tappan Zee Bridge and on I-684 but neither of those was for more than 10 minutes. Found 19 geocaches and only the last two were after dark, although the third last one was pretty close to dark.

Dinner was at the Mt. Kisco Coach Diner in Mt. Kisco, NY because it was the closest restaurant to the last cache site that was open on Thanksgiving Day. I had a turkey club sandwich.

GC1GA3R "WWFM IV Rising at the Kensico Dam" geocaching event

On Saturday, I went to WWFM IV Rising at the Kensico Dam, a geocaching flash mob event at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla, NY. It was raining, so it wasn't a good day for an outdoor event, but 42 people showed up anyway! The event lasted for 15 minutes and then we went our separate ways. As for the word "Rising" in the event name, that's the name of this 9/11 memorial sculpture. If you stand in the middle of the sculpture and look upwards, you'll see this interesting pattern.

After the event, I went around Southern Westchester, geocaching in the rain. Because of the rain, I picked mostly quick geocaches so I wouldn't get too wet. Got the last cache after dusk but I'll have to get used to searching in the dark, now that the sun sets so early.

Sunny. 63°F-72°F. I started geocaching in Northern Westchester, went south through Southern Westchester (I use I-287 as the dividing line between north and south), and finished up in the Bronx. The first two locations were easily the best of the day. Totally litter-free. It went downhill from there. The last cache site was such a dump that I decided it wasn't worth poking around to find the cache among the discarded takeout containers. I also came across human poop at a Home Depot parking lot in New Rochelle. Unfortunately, I found it the usual way I find such things. Ugh. Of course, it's not the first time I've come across something so disgusting in an urban area but all illusions of that area being better than NE Philly are now shattered.

I encountered a crazy gas station pump attendant this evening. He talked to himself the whole time and he topped off more than $2 past the first click until I told him to stop pumping gas or it'll spill out! State of New Jersey, could you please let me pump gas myself? Even with no formal gas pump training under my belt, I don't think I'd be any more dangerous than him.

Finally, I had Chicken McNuggets at McDonald's in Ramsey with five kinds of dipping sauces. That was great, and even better after I mixed the ranch sauce with the Buffalo hot sauce.

Tunnel of Mystery

There was a thunderstorm this morning so I stayed home and caught up with a few things. The sun came out in the afternoon. So, after lunch, I headed out to do a few quick errands. By that time, it wasn't worth going very far for geocaches so I just went to Westchester. Got a bunch of those, mostly in Yonkers.

The last geocache of the day was in City Island in the Bronx. So I decided to see whether the fish fry place at the end of City Island that I last visited years ago was still there. Indeed, it was there and still very much as dingy and crowded as I remember. I had fried whiting.

On Saturday, I went to a flash mob geocaching event, WWFM 3 - "Cachin' Cow Harbor". It was unusual and fun. Until 1pm, we hung around at various locations in the park, pretending not to know one another. Then, at exactly 1pm, we converged to the center of the park. The event lasted exactly 15 minutes, during which we had snacks (cookies and Hershey's kisses), held a raffle, and took a group photo. Then we dispersed and suddenly, the park was quiet once again. What's amusing were the reactions of the other people in the park. You could almost see the WTF? Some of them did ask us and we explained in two parts: what geocaching is about and what this specific event was. We didn't actually need to explain the first part though. It just so happened that they'd already seen a show on Channel 13 about geocaching.

After the event, we went our separate ways, although I did later bump into Wuzzfuzz50 and Kathieny at one of the geocaches on my list. There were a lot of geocaches I hadn't visited in this section of Long Island, so I carried on until dusk. Then I picked up the last geocache of the day (or night, by that time) in Flushing on my way to dinner in Flushing Chinatown.

Sunday was a comparatively low-key day. I went to Westchester, did a bunch of geocaches, and returned home a bit earlier than usual. One of the geocaches was near Stew Leonard's in Yonkers. I was curious about this grocer but I'd never been there before, so I took the opportunity to drop in and take a look. It's a rather upscale grocer, at least compared to where I usually shop. One item that is cheaper there is their milk (they have their own dairy), so I brought a carton home.

Bronx Tale

Sunny and 46°F. There were actually two geocaching events in the Philadelphia area I could've attended today but I just couldn't be bothered. So instead, I went to Westchester and the Bronx.

The reason why I hadn't been going geocaching in the Bronx is I assumed it would be congested and parking would be tough. The irony is Westchester, especially around Ardsley and Scarsdale, was the one with the traffic delays this afternoon. I also didn't have nearly as much trouble parking in the Bronx as I thought I would have. At no time did parking availability add more than 750 feet to my walk. I also practiced parallel parking twice on Bronx streets. (You can tell I don't have to do much of that in northern New Jersey or anywhere else, for that matter.) The first time, I did that perfectly. The second time, one wheel was on the curb. It was a very low curb so I didn't know it happened until I got out of the car to take a look.

Anyway, I got 4 geocaches in lower Westchester (Ardsley, Scarsdale, New Rochelle) and 9 geocaches in northern Bronx. (Riverdale, Spuyten Duyvil, and Van Cortlandt Park) I figured Palisades Center would be crowded on a Saturday evening, so for dinner, I had BK Big Fish sandwiches at Burger King in Park Ridge. (They'd been sending out coupons specific to that restaurant through the regional coupon mailer.)

Ever had one of those days when you dream about something and then you wake up and go and do it? Yes, it was surreal.

46°F and sunny. After finding one new geocache in nearby Ramsey, I crossed the Tappan Zee Bridge to Westchester to do a bunch more. I thought it would be good weather for walking a bit more, so I started in Northern Westchester (the portion of the county North of I-287) and hiked some of its rolling hills. Then I bagged a bunch of quick geocaches in Southern Westchester. I'm surprised that there were so many new geocaches to find. Looks like cache placement activity there has picked up a bit.

My phone case broke. Since I was passing Palisades Center on my way home, I thought about dropping in to get a replacement phone case. Saturday is a busy day at the mall, so I was only going to go in if I could find a parking space easily. Well, surprise! It was easy to find a parking space. I guess Easter weekend is not a shopping weekend. Checked Best Buy, but they might as well be Worst Buy with those prices. Staples and the Sprint store weren't any better. Only Target had a phone case at a reasonable price. (a little more than what I paid an Amazon seller for that first case. Best Buy, etc, would go out of business if everyone found out about Amazon seller prices.)

After that, I had some chicken stuff from Panda Express at the mall food court.

It was snowing this morning and snowing harder in the early afternoon. So I did some laundry (most notably, the mudhole-contaminated pants that have been sitting there since last weekend!) and cleaned up the kitchen. But then I ended up with half a dozen bags of waste paper, so I needed to go out anyway to take those to the town recycling center. So I headed out while it was still snowing.

After dropping off the paper, I went over to Westchester. By the time I got going, snow had turned to rain. Fortunately, the rain stopped long enough for me to get to "Jay's Hunting Lodge", which was a 1.2-mile walk at the Marshlands Conservancy in Rye. From then onwards, everything was just damp, although it started raining again towards the evening.

Didn't go to Palisades Center on my way back from Westchester because I figured it would be impossible to find underground (i.e. out of the rain) parking this evening. So I just came back to Park Ridge to use another Burger King coupon from Shoppers' Hotline. I love these. So far, no one has refused to accept these online coupons.

38°F. It was so cloudy that I thought it would rain or snow some time during the day but it never did. There has been quite a buildup of geocaches in Lower Westchester in the last few weeks since my last visit, so that's where I went. There was still time after doing all the new geocaches, so I went to Pelham Bay Park (Orchard Beach / Hunter Island) in the Bronx and did a few there caches there to fill the remaining time before dusk. Funny thing is that part was the longest walk of the day because two of the geocaches were located in parts of Hunter Island furthest from the Orchard Beach parking lot.

Orchard Beach is near City Island so I should've gone over to City Island for dinner, but it never came to mind. From what I remember from my last visit to City Island 6 years ago, the inexpensive restaurant at the end of City Island has good seafood and someone there logged all the Where's George bills that I spent there. Instead, I headed back across the bridge to Palisades Center Mall, where I noticed that Jo-Ann Etc and Bombay have both gone out of business. When times are tough, the discretionary stuff is always the first to go.

The "Paladin Quest" series of geocaches, some of which I did this afternoon, are supposed to lead up to a final mystery cache. That final cache uses information collected from each cache in the series. Problem is it's not clear from the cache descriptions what information I'm supposed to collect. My guess was that I needed to record the full name of a nearby store or landmark containing the color in the cache name and that was subsequently confirmed by the cache owner. For example, at "Paladin Quest #4---Green", I need the name of something "green" nearby. Here's what will spoil the puzzle though: You could simply go to those coordinates in Google Maps and search for the color.

Oil change this morning. 65,743 miles. UPS was supposed to deliver a package today (From Hong Kong to New Jersey in just two days! Impressive.) but the carrier arrived while I was out doing the oil change. So I called them to arrange for an evening pickup.

After a quick lunch I headed out to Rye and North Castle in Westchester for a bunch of new geocaches. It was an overcast day but it didn't rain until I was at the last cache. The only one that was a little tricky was "Y?" After looking in all the wrong places for a while, it dawned on me where that cache could be hidden and that was exactly it.

The caches... )

In the evening, I went to the UPS warehouse in Saddle Brook to pick up the package. They have a one-hour slot from 8pm to 9pm for package pickup. It's a good thing I remembered where the warehouse was because I didn't see a sign out by the road. It bothered me a little that they weren't ready to serve anyone for more than 10 minutes after the counter was supposed to open. However, once they got going, they handed out packages at a reasonable speed.

Wow! I blew off 3 events today. I had planned on going to a breakfast geocaching event in Horsham, PA. However, when I woke up at 6am, I saw the torrential downpour outside and figured it would be better to go back to sleep. Woke up quite a bit later in the morning. It was still raining heavily at the time, so I figured it wasn't worth rushing out to the Where's George lunch event in Bridgewater either. (I'd have been late to that one anyway.) Instead, I made pancakes. The 3rd event was a mascot gig at Stony Brook, which I hadn't planned on doing in the first place.

The rain stopped some time during the mid-afternoon. By that time, I couldn't really go very far so I went to Westchester. On my way to Westchester, I noticed that there was a new metal plate on the Tappan Zee Bridge. These metal plates are used to temporarily patch holes in the bridge. (I'm not saying that's a good thing.) There were also a few new suicide hotline "Life is worth living" signs that I didn't see last weekend. Funny that they should be adding all those suicide hotline signs now.

My first stop was in Saxon Woods County Park in Scarsdale for the Out of the woods - 2a (The next generation) geocache. It's a remake of the "Out of the Woods 2" geocache. It looks like the same hiding spot but I don't fully remember. After that, I went to Down By The Sound, which was in Davenport Park in New Rochelle. I was disappointed at the behavior of the locals. A bunch of them practically blocked the whole road stopping their cars side by side just so that they could roll down their car windows and holler at each other in an ape-like fashion. Then, when I got to the park, I noticed a lot of dog poop on the grass, in spite of the "No Dogs Allowed" signs at the edge of the park. If they're going to break that law, they should at least have the decency to dispose of the feces properly.

On my way home, I went to Palisades Center in West Nyack. Perhaps because of the rain, the mall wasn't as crowded this evening as it usually is on a Saturday. I had no problem finding a parking space anyway.

Took the day off since it was my birthday. Slept in and had a leisurely breakfast since it was bathrobe-and-fuzzy-slippers weather this morning.

In the afternoon, I went out to the Parsippany area (and also Morris Plains, Denville, Whippany, Florham Park, and Boonton) to do a bunch of geocaches. Most of them were easy. "Florham Park Footbridge" was tiny and harder to see, so it took a bit of staring at the hiding spot. At "Duf's 266", there was a police car in the parking area. I thought the police officer would question me for going under the railroad bridge and looking around for the geocache but he just sat in his car the whole time. I guess I wasn't suspicious enough.

Then, in the evening, I ended the day by attending the "Hungary Hungry Buffalo" geocaching event. The event was at Buffalo Wild Wings in Port Chester. First, I had Honey BBQ Wings. Those were supposed to be a "medium" (according to the menu) but they really weren't anything to write home about. For my second helping, I had Hot BBQ Wings. Now, that was more like it! Rather hot at first but I actually got used to the heat and then it was good eating.
