I checked the NYC parking calendar and Christmas Day is a free parking day. Also, I figured most of the restaurants in Flushing Chinatown would be open for business as usual so a trip to NYC seemed like a winning plan for the day.

There were lots of new geocaches in the Bronx in the East Tremont and Throgs Neck sections so that's where I started. I solved the restroom problem on the first drive through by noting that there were porta-toilets at Ferry Point Park next to the Whitestone Bridge toll plaza. All of those geocaches were fairly easy and located at or near sidewalks. Parking spaces were easier to find than usual too. So I was done with the first 12 geocaches before 2pm. Then I went to Queens and found a few more. Then I got a new geocache in New Hyde Park before heading to Flushing.

As I expected, Flushing Chinatown was mostly open for business on Christmas Day. Only a few restaurants were closed. I went to Curry Leaves again to try two more items from their menu. Then I went shopping on Roosevelt Avenue. Got some dumplings for breakfast tomorrow and some Asian pears. All in all, it was a good day.

Sunny. 63°F-72°F. I started geocaching in Northern Westchester, went south through Southern Westchester (I use I-287 as the dividing line between north and south), and finished up in the Bronx. The first two locations were easily the best of the day. Totally litter-free. It went downhill from there. The last cache site was such a dump that I decided it wasn't worth poking around to find the cache among the discarded takeout containers. I also came across human poop at a Home Depot parking lot in New Rochelle. Unfortunately, I found it the usual way I find such things. Ugh. Of course, it's not the first time I've come across something so disgusting in an urban area but all illusions of that area being better than NE Philly are now shattered.

I encountered a crazy gas station pump attendant this evening. He talked to himself the whole time and he topped off more than $2 past the first click until I told him to stop pumping gas or it'll spill out! State of New Jersey, could you please let me pump gas myself? Even with no formal gas pump training under my belt, I don't think I'd be any more dangerous than him.

Finally, I had Chicken McNuggets at McDonald's in Ramsey with five kinds of dipping sauces. That was great, and even better after I mixed the ranch sauce with the Buffalo hot sauce.

Today, I did a mascot gig at Shea Stadium for American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Of course, since the weather was good, I did some geocaches in the morning on my way to the gig. WHY?! (Did I hide a micro) and Don't Get Stumped! are both in Secaucus by the Mill Creek Marsh Trail. Very easy.

Then I crossed over to the Fordham section of the Bronx for Five of Diamonds. Now, that was a different experience. The cache was by the sidewalk at an auto repair shop. I got there and a helpful guy from the shop started directing me towards the cache. Wonder what tipped him off that I was looking for the cache. That was great because coordinates were soft. I found the cache and then had a brief conversation with the fellow.

After that, I navigated the congested streets of Fordham to Damian's place. Picked him up and went to Shea Stadium to meet up with the rest of our group: [livejournal.com profile] jbadger, [livejournal.com profile] foxwell, [livejournal.com profile] flykat, [livejournal.com profile] rapidtrabbit, [livejournal.com profile] jdpuppy, and [livejournal.com profile] jimwolf24. I especially wanted to do this gig because last year's gig at the same event was good and this is the last time we'll get to do this at Shea Stadium before it is torn down. (Citi Field, which is currently under construction next door, will be its replacement.) I wasn't disappointed. It was good. Lots of people. Good crowd and good interaction. We took turns going out in costume. I did the first shift in costume, escorted in the second shift, and did a short third shift in costume again.

After the gig, we made a quick stop just around the corner from the stadium for a geocache for [livejournal.com profile] jbadger. (It's one that I'd already found a week ago.) Then we went to Flushing Chinatown and had dinner at Sentosa. I had nasi lemak and ordered a lobak (shrimp and pork fritters) appetizer to share with the group.

Sunny and 46°F. There were actually two geocaching events in the Philadelphia area I could've attended today but I just couldn't be bothered. So instead, I went to Westchester and the Bronx.

The reason why I hadn't been going geocaching in the Bronx is I assumed it would be congested and parking would be tough. The irony is Westchester, especially around Ardsley and Scarsdale, was the one with the traffic delays this afternoon. I also didn't have nearly as much trouble parking in the Bronx as I thought I would have. At no time did parking availability add more than 750 feet to my walk. I also practiced parallel parking twice on Bronx streets. (You can tell I don't have to do much of that in northern New Jersey or anywhere else, for that matter.) The first time, I did that perfectly. The second time, one wheel was on the curb. It was a very low curb so I didn't know it happened until I got out of the car to take a look.

Anyway, I got 4 geocaches in lower Westchester (Ardsley, Scarsdale, New Rochelle) and 9 geocaches in northern Bronx. (Riverdale, Spuyten Duyvil, and Van Cortlandt Park) I figured Palisades Center would be crowded on a Saturday evening, so for dinner, I had BK Big Fish sandwiches at Burger King in Park Ridge. (They'd been sending out coupons specific to that restaurant through the regional coupon mailer.)
