Since I had a 4-day weekend over the Christmas holiday, I decided to take a short vacation somewhere that's new to me, namely Chincoteague. And while there, I visited the National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island too. Chincoteague is somewhat of a beach resort island. Two roads, Main Street going one way and Maddox Blvd going the other way, are where nearly all the businesses are located and those are mostly restaurants and beach gear stores. Since my visit was in the off-season and during the holidays, most of the stores and restaurants were closed but I still did have a seafood dinner, which was actually big enough to have leftovers to reheat in the hotel room microwave oven the next evening!

Friday's visit to Assateague was the centerpiece of the trip. What Assateague is known for are the wild ponies that live in the wildlife refuge. The whole town of Chincoteague is pony-crazy. The hotel where I stayed was full of pony pictures. Businesses, even convenience stores, sell pony memorabilia and plush toys. Even the town's trolley service is the Pony Express! So did I see ponies at Assateague? Yes, but they were rather far from the viewing area that day. But no matter. There was a lot more to see at Assateague, including the lighthouse, marsh scenery, and the visitor center with many educational displays.

And of course, there was geocaching too. 114 caches in 4 days! Most of those were over by West Ocean City and Ocean City, so I saved those for the last day because I knew I'd be passing through there on my way home. There were some interesting things out there, like the Jaws exhibit, an actual prop from the movie "Jaws". Also, there was a large chicken and a 13 1/2 speed limit.

I didn't go out anywhere on Christmas Day. I got a spiral-cut ham from the warehouse club a week ago, so I baked it and had that for lunch and dinner. After two meals, there was still enough ham and side dishes left over to pack four lunch containers for the coming work week!

The day after Christmas was sunny and 45-50°F. I went to work in the morning to take care of a few things but left in the afternoon. I figured there was plenty of time to do after-Christmas shopping in the evening, so I went geocaching in Downingtown first. Nothing fancy; just a few simple ones in area parks and a walk on the Struble Trail.

My family doesn't really celebrate Christmas so it's a quiet day of rest. Nevertheless, a few things did happen. Shortly after 1am, I scored some Random Cr*p on Woot. I haven't managed to do that before because the Woot server usually gets bogged down whenever they post this sale. This time, however, they added a new twist by putting up a fake sale page with a link to the real sale in the text description. Judging by what went on in the discussion forum, dozens of regular Wooters missed that subtlety. I found the link and was able to place the order before it ran out for real.

TGI Friday's sent me an appetizer coupon valid on Christmas Day only. I thought that was odd because I'd assumed nearly all businesses would be closed today, but I called them and found out that they were open regular hours! So I went to their New Castle location in the evening and got takeout tostada nachos to add to our dinner at home. Dinnertime entertainment was The Secret of NIMH on Hulu. I spotted this title in Hulu's list of movies today and since I'd never watched it all the way before, I figured it was as good a time as any to see it.

I checked the NYC parking calendar and Christmas Day is a free parking day. Also, I figured most of the restaurants in Flushing Chinatown would be open for business as usual so a trip to NYC seemed like a winning plan for the day.

There were lots of new geocaches in the Bronx in the East Tremont and Throgs Neck sections so that's where I started. I solved the restroom problem on the first drive through by noting that there were porta-toilets at Ferry Point Park next to the Whitestone Bridge toll plaza. All of those geocaches were fairly easy and located at or near sidewalks. Parking spaces were easier to find than usual too. So I was done with the first 12 geocaches before 2pm. Then I went to Queens and found a few more. Then I got a new geocache in New Hyde Park before heading to Flushing.

As I expected, Flushing Chinatown was mostly open for business on Christmas Day. Only a few restaurants were closed. I went to Curry Leaves again to try two more items from their menu. Then I went shopping on Roosevelt Avenue. Got some dumplings for breakfast tomorrow and some Asian pears. All in all, it was a good day.

Merry Christmas!

Stayed home today, so it was a day for catching up on various things that I neglected because I'd not been home. Replied to email and postal mail. Did some year-end accounting and financial planning. (Yeah, I know. Accounting on Christmas Day? Very Scrooge-like.) Did some tax planning, although unless I can pull a capital loss out of my butt, I really can't do anything other than estimate how much I'll need to pay at tax time. Also checked Prosper and put in two more bids on loans. Still no delinquencies, so it's doing okay.

Just noticed that Consumerist used my photo here. It's a picture of a Staples store in Bloomsburg, PA, which I took while on my way to Anthrocon in Pittsburgh back in July. I went geocaching in nearly every town along I-80.

Santa makes an appearance

I went to two Christmas Party geocaching events, Holiday Party!! on Tuesday night and NW CT Christmas Party on Wednesday night. The two events were originally not intended to be on two consecutive nights. It only happened that way because "Holiday Party" was postponed from last week to this week due to a snowstorm. It's a good thing it was postponed too because I was in Delaware last week and could not attend. Of course, I went geocaching in icebound Connecticut both days. I knew most of the geocaches would be challenging but I tried anyway and was successful a number of times. Some caches were in hiding spots that were sheltered from the snow, e.g. rock overhangs and tree holes, so they were still findable. As for the rest, success depended on luck, tools, and educated guesses.

"Holiday Party" was at Tailgators in Derby. This was a lively, raucous affair with lots of attendees. I think we filled up more than half the bar/restaurant. We had homemade cookies. I ordered the deluxe nachos after I saw another geocacher eating that and noted that this appetizer was big enough to be a meal. We also collected donations of toys for Toys For Tots. I donated a Gund plush leopard. At the end of the party, there was a raffle. (gift exchange) I won an ammo box filled with goodies.

"NW CT Christmas Party" was at a family restaurant in New Milford. Compared to "Holiday Party", this was a low-key affair, a smaller gathering of geocachers. We had a gift exchange at this event too and Santa made an appearance. I got another ammo box and also an LED flashlight. (because they know how I keep going for geocaches at night :) ) I had spaghetti with sausage. We also shared a bunch of appetizers and ended the dinner with cookies.

Today, I ran a lot of errands that needed to be done. Went to the bank, post office, fruit market, supermarket, drugstore, and Chinese supermarket. I also finally went to Proline Auto Body in Elmwood Park to get the new front shield installed. It was pretty quick because I had an appointment. When I arrived at Proline, the mechanic had the part ready and started work right away. He was done in a few minutes. That should be the end of the deer damage.
