Governor Mountain

Another day with good weather. So this evening, I went out to Ringwood to find the Governor Mtn / Monk View geocache. It's on Governor Mountain in the southwest section of Ringwood State Park. I actually was up there five years ago for Governor Mtn/ Cupsaw. Surprisingly, that old cache is still there and still in good condition. Of course, there are geocaches older than that but five years is pretty long.

Anyway, since I'd been on the mountain before, I already knew the correct approach. I parked behind a church on Carletondale Road. I followed a local trail from the corner of the parking lot and that trail quickly joined up with the yellow-blazed trail. Although uphill, this trail is not nearly as steep as the mountain trails in Ramapo Reservation. It went up a bit and leveled off for quite a stretch before going up again towards the south slope of the mountain. I then took a short off-trail hike to the cache site, which was on a gently sloping rock face and found the cache right away. After this evening's adventure, I had a Spicy Italian footlong at Subway in Ramsey.

Consumerist used my photo of a rusty gas pump here. It was an interesting item I saw in Denville while on my way to a geocache in town. Also, NowPublic asked for and used my photos here and here but it'd be difficult to find my contributions. It seems that NowPublic asks for hundreds of photos per story.

Merry Christmas!

Stayed home today, so it was a day for catching up on various things that I neglected because I'd not been home. Replied to email and postal mail. Did some year-end accounting and financial planning. (Yeah, I know. Accounting on Christmas Day? Very Scrooge-like.) Did some tax planning, although unless I can pull a capital loss out of my butt, I really can't do anything other than estimate how much I'll need to pay at tax time. Also checked Prosper and put in two more bids on loans. Still no delinquencies, so it's doing okay.

Just noticed that Consumerist used my photo here. It's a picture of a Staples store in Bloomsburg, PA, which I took while on my way to Anthrocon in Pittsburgh back in July. I went geocaching in nearly every town along I-80.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] digeri, [livejournal.com profile] hunterwolf, [livejournal.com profile] marauderosu, and [livejournal.com profile] skorzy for Christmas cards.

What I got for Christmas... )

Hope you're all having a good holiday season too.

Lost Brook Preserve

Unlike yesterday, when it rained almost the whole day, it was sunny today. So this afternoon, I went to the Lost Brook Preserve in Tenafly for the Black Friday geocache. Like the cache owner, I didn't do much shopping on Black Friday. That would've been a waste of daylight that could've been used for geocaching. :) Anyway, I took a look at the trail map at the Tenafly Nature Center website and saw that there is a backdoor trailhead in a residential area. I went into the woods that way and it was a short walk to the cache site.

My Flickr photostream just went over 100,000 views! It was at around 99,950 views late last night so this must have happened some time during the day today. Here's a screenshot:

And speaking of Flickr, Consumerist used my "Naked" picture in this article. That's not as naughty as it sounds. :)

Potash Lake

Had the loaner car from yesterday morning until yesterday afternoon. What good is a loaner car if you can't use it for geocaching, even if the geocache is a park and grab? So I went out for B.A.H.'s Potash Lake Muggle Cache. It was at Potash Lake in Oakland. The geocache was actually closer to the parking area than the lake, but I did go to the lake shore afterwards to take a few pictures of the area.

Consumerist weighed in on TD Bank's Commerce Bank acquisition. In their typically irreverent style, they wrote about the coin-counting machines, "People love that sh*t." :) Opinions on TD Bank from Consumerist commenters vary. According to them, TD Bank service is good in most places, except in Massachusetts where it is not as good. One commenter mentioned Commerce Bank's low $100 minimum for checking accounts. However, in New Jersey, that's a moot point. Since 1991, state law has already required banks to provide a low-minimum low-cost checking account.

One lesson to take from this is to not be afraid of change. I knew from the outset that this arrangement would not last forever. Before I switched to Commerce Bank, I had a checking account at United Jersey Bank. Through a series of mergers, that bank turned into Summit Bank, and then Fleet Bank, and then Bank of America. (I got out some time between Summit and Fleet because that's when Commerce Bank came to town.) If TD BankNorth turns out to be sub-par in this area, then I'd say that'll be a kick in the butt to go take a look at the local credit union.

I-95 Rest Area

Another photo of mine was published in The Consumerist. Go flag bucket! :)

The heavy hand of Rockland County struck again. Two geocaches, Point Seven Five and Treasure Island were disabled and presumably removed because the cache owner didn't want to bother applying for geocache permits for the two caches. On the one hand, Rockland County's new geocache permit requirement has a chilling effect on new and existing cache placements, so I am annoyed at the county. On the other hand, if these two caches do eventually get archived, that will open up Kennedy-Dells County Park to new caches if anyone is willing to do the paperwork. Hmm... maybe I can recreate the first geocache (which was in Kennedy-Dells) that got me started 6 years ago.

Where Rockland County has caused a problem was when GC14J5Z was unpublished because it was discovered, after the fact, to not have a permit. I went to Kakiat County Park to find it on July 24, but while I was out, the online cache listing got retracted so I can't log it online. Worse yet, I left a travel bug in the cache so that's in limbo too. Since I still have the info from my original printout, I sent an inquiry to the cache owner to find out what's going on.

Nothing much of note happened in the last day or two. However, this weekend looks like a busy one so I'll have to start preparing tonight.
