The was rain in the weather forecast and it did, in fact, rain a bit this afternoon, so I didn't think I would be going anywhere this evening. But evening came and it was only cloudy, so I went to Caldwell for the Triple Tree geocache. Aside from this geocache, there are a number of objects on Second Mountain. There is a water tank. There are the ruins and abandoned roads of a mental asylum. There is a rock called White Rock that isn't white.

After that, I went to Nathan's in Willowbrook Mall for a cheesesteak. Only a few days left to use this set of coupons! As I was driving on I-80, I saw a ferris wheel on top of Garret Mountain, which meant there was a carnival this evening. I went there and saw that they were charging $4 for parking so I decided not to go in. There wasn't a charge for parking when the carnival was in my town so I can wait until it moves to another location.

Instead, I went to Micro Center in Paterson to take another stab at buying an external DVD/CD drive and a bluetooth mouse for my netbook. Once again, nothing suitable was on sale, but I did find a numeric keypad + USB hub in clearance. (Trying it now and it works pretty nicely.) Got home just in time for the heavy rain and lightning.

Garden outside the Best Western

The weather wasn't bad this evening, so I went out a little further to bag cache find #9500. I went for Baby Bird NJ in Pompton Plains. It is in the garden of the Best Western Regency House hotel. The white gazebo looks like it might be used for wedding photography so access to the cache may be restricted at certain times, but tonight, there was no such problem. The cache description also mentions the smell of chicken cooking. That would be the nearby KFC, visible in this picture.

After that, I went to Willowbrook Mall to take a look around. I hadn't been there since last year but it really hasn't changed much. Still mostly uninteresting. Then came the real reason for this little trip: salad bar at Ruby Tuesday. To get the salad bar, I picked the quiche combo this time, keeping in mind that real programmers don't eat quiche. :) I should've gone to Ruby Tuesday at Garden State Plaza instead though. The one at Willowbrook Mall is slow to assign seating even when there are empty tables. I should've remembered what happened at last year's Crazy 8s geocaching event at this Ruby Tuesday. We had to wait far too long for service and some of us actually left the restaurant to eat at the food court.

Crazy 8's Meet & Greet Dinner Event (GC1CYY8)

This evening, I went to Crazy 8's Meet & Greet Dinner Event at Ruby Tuesday in Willowbrook Mall in Wayne. This geocaching event is on 08/08/08 at 8:08pm. I got there rather early because I took a lot less than expected on my pre-dinner geocache, but there were already a few geocachers waiting in the food court outside Ruby Tuesday. We went into the restaurant when it got a bit closer to 8pm. Our group this time was about 30 people. Unfortunately, Ruby Tuesday was clearly unprepared for our group. By the time someone took our orders, it was already half an hour into the event. I had salad bar as the entree so I wouldn't have to wait for the food. (but I do that every time at Ruby Tuesday anyway because their salad bar is actually pretty good) Anyway, it was good to see the North Jersey geocachers. Ironically, I don't see them very often even though I live in North Jersey myself because most of their events are camping events and geocoin swaps, and I'm not too fond of those.

The pre-dinner cache was Short Line RR, also in Wayne but a bit to the North from the mall. It's on an old railroad line that is no longer in use. I'd read the cache logs before heading out there and I noticed that some people took up to half an hour to find the cache, so that's how much time I set aside for this cache. How long did I actually take? Two minutes. It really wasn't that hard because I knew how it would be hidden based on my experience at a similar cache a bit further up the tracks.
