This evening, just for the heck of it, I went to Wayne for the Shrimp Mate? geocache. As you may have deduced from the information on the cache page or in the online logs, that site is near an Outback Steakhouse. I went in to inquire and there was no wait for a table, so I had a Bloomin' Onion.

I put a hold on my mail before traveling out to Anthrocon. This afternoon, I went to the post office to pick up the accumulated mail and the postal clerk just handed me the whole tray. Lots of letters that I need to deal with, but among those is an invitation to the Stamford Museum Volunteer Appreciation Picnic that I got for doing a mascot gig there earlier this year. I'm somewhat on the fence on going because it's the same day as a geocaching event in another state. I should find out if anyone else from our group is going.

Garden outside the Best Western

The weather wasn't bad this evening, so I went out a little further to bag cache find #9500. I went for Baby Bird NJ in Pompton Plains. It is in the garden of the Best Western Regency House hotel. The white gazebo looks like it might be used for wedding photography so access to the cache may be restricted at certain times, but tonight, there was no such problem. The cache description also mentions the smell of chicken cooking. That would be the nearby KFC, visible in this picture.

After that, I went to Willowbrook Mall to take a look around. I hadn't been there since last year but it really hasn't changed much. Still mostly uninteresting. Then came the real reason for this little trip: salad bar at Ruby Tuesday. To get the salad bar, I picked the quiche combo this time, keeping in mind that real programmers don't eat quiche. :) I should've gone to Ruby Tuesday at Garden State Plaza instead though. The one at Willowbrook Mall is slow to assign seating even when there are empty tables. I should've remembered what happened at last year's Crazy 8s geocaching event at this Ruby Tuesday. We had to wait far too long for service and some of us actually left the restaurant to eat at the food court.

Crazy 8's Meet & Greet Dinner Event (GC1CYY8)

This evening, I went to Crazy 8's Meet & Greet Dinner Event at Ruby Tuesday in Willowbrook Mall in Wayne. This geocaching event is on 08/08/08 at 8:08pm. I got there rather early because I took a lot less than expected on my pre-dinner geocache, but there were already a few geocachers waiting in the food court outside Ruby Tuesday. We went into the restaurant when it got a bit closer to 8pm. Our group this time was about 30 people. Unfortunately, Ruby Tuesday was clearly unprepared for our group. By the time someone took our orders, it was already half an hour into the event. I had salad bar as the entree so I wouldn't have to wait for the food. (but I do that every time at Ruby Tuesday anyway because their salad bar is actually pretty good) Anyway, it was good to see the North Jersey geocachers. Ironically, I don't see them very often even though I live in North Jersey myself because most of their events are camping events and geocoin swaps, and I'm not too fond of those.

The pre-dinner cache was Short Line RR, also in Wayne but a bit to the North from the mall. It's on an old railroad line that is no longer in use. I'd read the cache logs before heading out there and I noticed that some people took up to half an hour to find the cache, so that's how much time I set aside for this cache. How long did I actually take? Two minutes. It really wasn't that hard because I knew how it would be hidden based on my experience at a similar cache a bit further up the tracks.

There was heavy rain yesterday evening, but this evening, the weather was fine; not particularly hot or humid even. So I went out to Wayne for two geocaches. The first was parkview. It wasn't a hard one. Just a short dash into a slightly-muddy wooded area. I hadn't brought information for any other geocaches but I checked on the cell phone web browser and saw that Reading RR wasn't that far away. (or rather, it wouldn't be far if I'd gone the correct way instead of going out on I-80/US-46 and having to make a U-turn half a mile out of the way, but I digress) This cache site was a weed-filled nightmare. I was lucky to find this one because I didn't even think of checking that spot for the cache. I just happened to see it while crossing from one patch of weeds to another patch of weeds.

After that, I went to Willowbrook Mall for dinner. I hadn't been to that mall for years, so I was surprised to find an Arby's in the food court. Better yet, they still had the Pick 5 for $5.95 special, which is very filling if 3 of the 5 items are sandwiches. :)

identi.ca is an open source alternative to Twitter (the source code is Laconica), but like most Twitter alternatives, it seems to be more popular when Twitter is performing poorly. Commentary aside, I heard from more than a few people and blog posts that identi.ca has a Twitter-compatible API. Since it wasn't difficult to slip that into TwitVim, I did that in release 0.2.19. It's more of a hack than a proper feature implementation since all of TwitVim's messages still refer to Twitter instead of identi.ca, but it works pretty well and I can talk to either Twitter or identi.ca simply by changing a config variable. Of course, in my own installation, I wrote some additional commands to help me switch between the two services.

Yesterday afternoon, I went to the Ramsey Walking Path geocache, which is conveniently just a block from downtown Ramsey. By coincidence, I got there just in time to meet up with four geocachers. We all looked for the geocache but I figured it out first because I'd only just seen a hide like that the evening before. Then I had a spicy Italian footlong at Subway in Ramsey. The manager actually wanted me to photograph it and so I did. (Everyone knows about my food photography!)

In the evening, I went for the Laurelwood geocache in Laurelwood Arboretum in Wayne. It's a beautiful garden, although a bit dull that evening because of the rainy weather. Also, the deer kept watching as I went by.

Gregg Froehner Park

Mailed the Federal and State tax returns at the Park Ridge post office this afternoon. So, unless there are problems, I'm done with this tax season. I don't expect my 2008 taxes to be as high as 2007 but a lot can happen.

In the evening, I went to Wayne for the FREEDOM BEGAN HERE geocache. It's at Gregg Froehner Park off a residential road. Actually, I'm not sure that's part of the park. The cache was actually at the edge of a fenced-in Revolutionary War burial ground. I didn't see much in the fenced-in area though. The place is overgrown. There were only a few headstones that I could see.

After that, since the route I used to avoid the Garden State Parkway went right by the mall, I stopped at Garden State Plaza for dinner. I didn't know the food court had Thai food. However, as is usually the case at a mall food court, it isn't very authentic. (It's more Chinese than Thai.) I had mango chicken, tofu vegetables, and pad thai.

Glen Rock

Blue Birdhouse

Woke up quite a bit earlier than usual this morning. I figured it would be a waste just going back to sleep when there's a geocache less than 10 miles away, so I went to Glen Rock for the Why Do They Call It Glen Rock? geocache. So why do they call the town Glen Rock? Because of this rock. It was a two-part geocache. The first part involved gathering information from the plaques and signs at the large rock. The second part was a hike in a nearby park to which I'd been before. However, I forgot where the trailhead was so I had to drive around a bit to find it. The rest was easy.

In the afternoon, I went to Wayne for the High Mountain Preserve red trailhead geocache. By this time, it had started snowing a little but not to the point where anything was sticking. The red trailhead is at the William Paterson University campus so that's where I drove in and parked. That too was a quick cache. Not so quick was the journey back. I got caught in a traffic delay caused by a collision between a car and a donut truck. That's not how America runs on Dunkin'!

By the evening, enough snow had fallen to cover the ground. Had to scrape a bit of ice off the windshield. Anyway, I'm now on leave until the end of the year so I'll try to get out to more local events, even some weekday ones.
