Yes, it's already the second week of the new year but I was busy the first week and 2011 was such a busy year that it was hard to distill the important things from the year. The biggest change is after 16 months being out of work, I returned to work for a small startup (literally a 6-person office when I joined) in Wilmington. My previous job wasn't at a big firm but this one is microscopic in comparison and it's a lot different. There is no bureaucracy, no office politics, no cubicles, and very little formality. I was given full access and was trusted to do the right thing from day one. I learnt a lot as I went along and within a week, I had started contributing important code to the system. Best of all, I was never left with the feeling that anything I did was futile or a waste. Any software I wrote was put to good use pretty much right away and I deployed it myself most of the time. So all in all, it's been a promising start. Then again, I thought the same thing back when my previous job began, so let's check back on this one in 14 years and see if it has withstood the test of time. :)

Of course, with the new job, I had less time for geocaching but I think I did as much of that as I wanted to on weekends and after work in the summer. I ended the year with more geocache finds than year 2009 but not 2010. The year was dominated by Lancaster with two big geocache series, the battleship caches and the rail trail caches, although Delaware was no slouch either with the DGT caches, the C&D power trail, and the First State Challenge. I tried to get out to more geocaching events as well, especially the ones in Bucks and Montgomery County that would've been a 2-hour drive from my old home in North Jersey. Now that these are only an hour from home, it hardly feels like an arduous journey getting there. I also started going to a few Where's George events locally and in Maryland. And of course, I went to local furmeets too whenever I could and attended 3 furry conventions, FA: United, Anthrocon and Furfright. The great thing about this area is there's an event or gathering going on pretty much every weekend. On the other hand, the downside is I haven't had as many mascot gigs now that I'm distant from Hi-4. I'm also losing touch with NYC-area folks but that is to be expected.

I kept up the pace on personal projects as usual. In its 4th year, TwitVim had another round of incremental improvements, although I thought the multiple login feature was big enough to bump the version number. My Foursquare webapp, 4sqNoGPS, became PlainSquare when I rewrote it for the Foursquare V2 API. I also changed the CSS so it looks more like a mobile app on small screens while keeping the desktop interface simple. I've found this setup to be good enough for most day-to-day use and really only hit the official app to upload photos and claim specials. Remember the beta Google Chromebook I received in December 2010? Well, I used it a lot more throughout 2011 and that led to my participation in the Cr-48 binaries project. I probably wouldn't use the Cr-48 for serious development work but now that we have a text editor, a few scripting languages, and some dev tools ported to it, light work is possible. And finally, I did get around to scrapping my old website and reworking it into a Drupal-based site. This doesn't mean that I'll update it any more frequently but when I do, it'll be less of a pain. :)

This evening, I went to the DuPont Environmental Education Center in Wilmington to find the DEEC: Ranger Rick's Riverside Resting Spot geocache. (Pictures) I love coming to this preserve because it's the nicest one close to home. There is an elevated walkway leading to a four-storey nature center building with scenery of marshland and an old railroad bridge.

There was a walkathon going on in the Wilmington Riverfront area at the time. Rather than try to drive through a throng of walkers, I pulled into a parking area and used Comcast wi-fi to post my DEEC pictures to Google+. It was then when I noticed that the suspension warning banner had been removed from my Google+ profile. The story began yesterday afternoon when I got a big popup message on Google+. Then I saw a 4-day warning banner on my profile saying that it was not in compliance with their names policy. I wish I'd taken more screenshots. I only took this one after I accidentally clicked on the "appeal" link. I submitted more info, mainly links to Livejournal and other places where I used the name, and left it alone. For a new media corporation, Google is surprisingly poor at communication. I didn't get any follow-up emails. The warning banner disappeared as abruptly as it appeared, leaving me wondering what the heck happened.

I haven't been writing about Where's George much. I still participate, although not quite as much as in years past. I got a great pair of hits today on two $2 bills. One is an 11-year sleeper and the other is a 10-year sleeper. The 11-year sleeper is a bill I entered just a week after I started Georging! This shows how sporadically $2 bills travel. $2 bills are comparatively rare in circulation, so people tend to collect them. You can order those from the bank if you wanted. The bank may impose an order minimum of anywhere from $200 to $2000 and, more often than not, what you'll get is straps of crisp new twos. A decade ago, I was interested in collecting red-seal $2 bills (series 1963 and earlier, with the seal printed in red instead of green). So, over a period of time, I called many bank branches in Northern NJ asking what they had in their vaults. I got quite a haul of $2 bills that way. I saved the old bills and entered the newer ones into Where's George, and that's what eventually led to today's pair of $2 hits.

Cloudy, 70-75°F. I only found out about May in Maryland, a Where's George meet in the Baltimore area, yesterday but fortunately, it took only five minutes to plan everything, including getting geocache info for the area. It was a 3-part meet: breakfast in Hunt Valley, ballgame in Baltimore, and dinner in Owings Mills. My plan was to go to the first and third parts of it, but to skip the ballgame and go geocaching between Hunt Valley and Owings Mills.

Breakfast was quiet. CMgeorger and I were the first two at Panera Bread and we were the only ones in the group until JBinthe615 arrived towards the end of the meet. I had a steak and egg sandwich. After that, I geocached around Hunt Valley / Cockeysville before heading a bit west towards Owings Mills. Having never geocached in this area before, I had many to pick from and got 28 in about 6 hours, including a bunch on the Red Run Stream trail system.

When I was done with the geocaches, I went to Greene Turtle in Owings Mills for the last part of the meet. This was a bigger meetup with over 20 people. We used the party room at the Greene Turtle. I had a chicken and fish basket.

What an action-packed Saturday! I went to two events. The first was a Where's George event, the DE Annual Gathering 2011, in the afternoon. It was at Stewart's Brewing Company in Bear. I ordered the chicken cheesesteak and then proceeded to chat about Where's George with the group. There were Georgers from Delaware and neighboring states, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. However, there was also someone from Ohio! She had a reason to be in this area and decided to stop by.

In the evening, I went to Delaware Furbowl 25. I skipped the dinner portion of the meet and went straight to the bowling alley. I'm impressed at the improvements they've made to this monthly event. We've taken over the rec room (the room with the air hockey table) of the bowling alley for event functions. Part of that room was curtained off into a fursuit changing area / lounge. (which is far better than the way we used to change into fursuit in the restroom) We also used the rec room for the photoshoot, which ought to be tons better than the old location by the bowling lanes simply because of better lighting. Also new to me were event badges and the event registration tables. It's becoming a mini-con!

This time, I wore the newly-refurbished Chestnut Husky fursuit. I sought the services of [livejournal.com profile] jackalopejess last year and took delivery recently. I think she did a wonderful job doing various repairs and making some replacement parts, especially the tail and feet, which used to have recurring issues. Anyway, stepping into this fursuit was like getting into a comfortable old character, which nevertheless still has a lot of life in it. As for bowling, I played my usual 70/80-point games but I got two strikes, no doubt by chance.

Other things I did today: Found two geocaches, Penn Wood Park and Hamburg P&R, both on the way to the Where's George event. Also, I tried the new string trimmer. I got it at a discount during the winter, knowing that I could use it later on the Spring growth. I used it on the longer bunches of grass in the front yard and it was faster than getting the lawnmower out for this.

Cloudy, 43°F. There's actually more to the story from yesterday that I failed to write about, but in the interest of not being too long-winded, I'm just going to start with: I woke up late. Now, the early bird would've left already and so the late bird got the worm. So I had a bit of business to take care of this morning. By the time I was done, it was noon. Seeing as how I wasn't going to get in a full day of geocaching, I made a last-minute decision to go to the Bok Bok Fresh Gathering in Sicklerville.

That was a Where's George gathering, not geocaching or furry. I hadn't been to a WG gathering in at least a few years (not counting my recent meetup with Rich and Christine) so I was surprised that I still remembered some of the WG regulars and they still remembered me. I'd never been to Bok Bok Fresh before, so I didn't know what to expect. It's a yuppie luncheon, in the same league as Panera Bread in terms of pricing. I had a Bok Bok Original sandwich with sweet potato fries. At the end of the gathering, there was a game of LCR, but using dollar bills instead of chips. I didn't play; just watched.

After the gathering, I headed out to grab a few geocaches. Since I've been to this area a bunch of times already, there weren't too many geocaches left to find. So for the first cache, I drove about 7 miles out from Bok Bok Fresh to Hope You Do Well, which is near the Hopewell Cemetery. Then I went to Tire Graveyard and SJG Birthday Prize Cache, which is about all that I had time for before dusk. All in all, it was an interesting day.

Sunny, 32-34°F. About 3 inches of snow fell overnight. I wasn't in a particular hurry today so I only went out to shovel snow after having breakfast and cleaning up the kitchen a bit. So by the time I start working on the snow, half of it had melted.

I was going to South Jersey to meet up with Christine and Rich at Long John Silver's (a.k.a. Fictional Pirate) in Berlin. Did a few geocaches along the way. The first two, Ayume's Birthday Treasure and Pa Pa Power!, were in Williamstown. I thought Ayume's would be difficult to find in the snow because it's a small cache. Fortunately, it wasn't on the ground. "Pa Pa Power!" was on the ground but I heard an unusual noise when I poked at the snow and that's how I found it.

Then I went to Is Hindu in you? in Stella Park in Winslow Township. The town hadn't removed the snow from the parking area so I parked on the side of the road with two wheels on the asphalt and two wheels on the snowbank. Not a good situation but I hoped I wouldn't take too long on this cache. This one wasn't that difficult but it was covered by snow. I found it after poking at about half a dozen likely spots.

After that, I went to LJS in Berlin for the meetup. I had a chicken and fish variety platter. Christine and Rich had other combinations of Taco Bell and LJS foods. It was a good time. Probably should do this again another time.

Apparently, this TD Bank promotion has been running since January 17 but I only noticed the ad today in the Sunday newspaper. The banner ad has probably been up on the TD Bank website for a while, which goes to show how I tend to tune out online ads these days. Basically, you get $10 back in gift cards for every $100 in signature-based purchases at grocery stores using the TD Bank debit card.

What I'm wondering though is what's the catch? What's in it for TD Bank? No doubt they get a cut of the merchant fees but that's not anywhere close to 10%. There's the obvious: TD Bank hopes that people who are not TD Bank customers will sign up for checking accounts to take advantage of this offer and that people who haven't been using debit cards will get into the habit of using those. I suspect there is something a bit more insidious in play too. Signature purchases can take a few days to post. So maybe the bank hopes that some percentage of people who start using debit cards instead of cash for groceries will accidentally overdraft their accounts and incur bank fees, perhaps enough in fees to more than offset the $10 bonus for everyone.

That aside, it's a simple-enough deal for me to snag since I already have a TD Bank account. The annoying part is using the debit card will cut into my Where's George activity. (The link goes to a Yahoo article mentioning Where's George that bogged down the website with heavy traffic today.)

I finally got a chance to take a look at the House Stimulus Bill (H.R. 1), not the 647-page full text but at least the summaries. Just like last year, there is a tax credit. It's $500 for individuals with a phase-out starting at an AGI of $75K. So once again, I'll get nothing. Same old story. Then again, folks like me are always tripping over bags of money</sarcasm> and therefore need no special incentive to go out and buy those big-screen TVs, right?

Speaking of money, I didn't attend Further Confusion this year but apparently, one of my Where's George bills did. It's really cool that the user note actually mentions the con. I was wondering how it got there but then I remembered that [livejournal.com profile] foxwell and [livejournal.com profile] jbadger had some of my bills from when we met up and did a mascot gig in December so that's probably it. Thanks to both of you for getting the bills out there.

And finally, it appears that someone is starting sh*t on Twitter by brandjacking Furcadia, following every furry on Twitter, and posting a whole bunch of nonsense. I was just going to ignore that but there were two things to note. First is the 16 follow-backs. I have to ask why. I guess some have auto-follow turned on or are less discriminating in who they follow. Eh, their choice. Second is there do seem to be quite a number of folks from the fandom on Twitter now, which is quite a change from the days when only I and a few others were tweeting.

Got a Where's George hit in New Zealand early this morning.

Hot day today. Temperature was over 80°F in the afternoon. Didn't go out anywhere in the afternoon but in the evening, I had a BBQ Rib Patty footlong overloaded with veggies (just the way I like it) at Subway in Ramsey.

NJ's Worst

I got a Where's George hit in Ireland today. Just in time for St. Patrick's Day? :)

With the time change, there's an extra hour of daylight in the evening. That raises the possibility of after-work geocaches. So how did I use the first weekday evening of the season? By going for No Redeeming Value: NJ's Worst Cache! (In retrospect, it may not have been the best choice to get things rolling. :) ) It's in a swampy, slightly trashy, wooded area off the far end of a strip mall parking lot in Kinnelon. The cache itself was hilarious. It's an oatmeal canister with "Not oats. Do not eat" scrawled on it and it was filled with junky stuff such as a piece of fishing line, a piece of duct tape, and a plastic toy soldier. Truly NJ's worst cache, just like the name says!

Speaking of NJ's worst, here's something I left out of a prior journal entry because of length. A number of years back, we had Cussing Man in the neighborhood. He would drive around the town of Ramsey in his black pickup truck with the window down and he would cuss and swear at all the other drivers. I honestly didn't know how people around here tolerated him. I encountered him a bunch of times myself. Then I stopped seeing him. I didn't think much of it. To be honest, I didn't miss him at all. Good riddance, I thought. So I really had no idea where he had gone off to until recently, when I ran into Cussing Man again in Pennsylvania, just outside of Allentown. Yep, same guy, same black pickup truck, except that he had changed the number plate to a Pennsylvania plate. Still the same bad temper. He told me, "Go back to Jersey, [expletive]." Which was funny because of where he himself came from.

Deer Damage

I set up an appointment through GEICO to get a damage estimate. I doubt it'll even exceed the deductible but I thought it would be a good idea to get that done anyway in case there is something I missed. One thing I noticed is GEICO has very few choices for auto body shops in my area. In their database, the auto body shops showing up in a search on my zip code are in Rahway, Croton-on-Hudson, and Middletown, all at least 40 miles away. There is one, however, in Elmwood Park, which is only 15 miles away. So I'll be going to that one Wednesday morning.

The other thing that happened (actually, it happened a few days ago) is I now have over 10,000 Where's George hits in New York state! Here are my top 10 states:
Rank State Hits
1. New Jersey (NJ) 10,907
2. New York (NY) 10,024
3. Pennsylvania (PA) 2,854
4. Connecticut (CT) 1,374
5. Massachusetts (MA) 955
6. Virginia (VA) 842
7. Florida (FL) 654
8. Maryland (MD) 630
9. California (CA) 494
10. North Carolina (NC) 351
Next five-figure state will be Pennsylvania, although that will take a few decades unless I move there. :)

This Where's George hit in the town of Emporium gave me a new county in Pennsylvania. I'm now only 3 counties away from Pennsylvania county bingo. Out of curiosity, I looked up Emporium, PA, in Google Maps. I'm not surprised it took this long to get a hit in that county. It's pretty far from the interstate highway and the main connectors are local numbered routes.

I went through my little collection of Where's George-related links and found this message on George Levels. It requires a login so I'll quote the message here:

It's amusing that I'm an "Adam" now. :) Maybe the brackets need to be adjusted. There are now 66 Georgers with 6-figure bill counts. Back when that message was posted, I think there were only a few. (or maybe just one: Adam himself.)

Every evening, Pathmark of Ramsey puts all the leftover rotisserie chicken from their deli section up on sale. The discount appears to be 50% every time. So yesterday evening, I got a whole rotisserie chicken for $2.50. It's good for two meals. Add some veggies and fresh fruit and it's decent eating for not much money.
