Saturday morning, I joined Delaware (and some Pennsylvania and New Jersey) geocachers in the "Red Lion Road Adopt a Highway CITO XII". It's a geocaching event to clean up Route 71 near Lums Pond. We met up at the start of the road by our "Adopt A Highway" sign. Then we split up into groups of 4 or so and each group took a 1/2-mile section of the road. It didn't look like there would be that much litter at first but I saw that whenever I went down the embankment from the road a bit, there were a lot of bottles and cans all over. So that's what I mostly did - I went up and down the embankment, filling up my trash bag multiple times. Then we trucked all those bags of trash back to the meeting spot and piled those up for DelDOT to pick up later. We put in about two hours of work but 30 people can pick up a lot of litter!

The rest of the day, I found a few local geocaches. Hiked a few miles in Middle Run, visited a scenic railroad bridge fishing area in Conowingo, and waded in a storm drain. (a geocache where slippers / flip-flops were useful) Then in the evening, I went to Delaware Furbowl 57. It's pretty amazing that a regular bowling meet has turned into a mini-convention with attendees from hundreds of miles away making a weekend trip of it. Had the opportunity to meet up with some folks I hadn't seen in years and also some new acquaintances I'd only contacted over Twitter before that. So that was fun.

On Sunday, I tried going to York via Maryland instead of via Lancaster, but actually spent most of the day in the Maryland countryside, around Jarrettsville, Monkton, White Hall, and Parkton, to the north of Hunt Valley where Fur 'the More used to be. Prettyboy Dam was the most scenic spot of the day and the red brain was the weirdest geocache of the day. Generally, I like the countryside better than the urban areas near Baltimore. People seem nicer too. Near the end of the day, I talked to someone living on a rural road, whose property was across the road from the cache. He seemed genuinely impressed by the assortment of caches in the countryside and the nearby town of New Freedom.

I went to Proline Auto Body in Elmwood Park this morning to get a repair estimate. This body shop is affiliated with GEICO, so much so that they're practically neighbors. The insurance adjuster's office is in a one-room building next door to the body shop. The car rental representative is also in the same office as the insurance adjuster, so I suppose you could make all your arrangements in one place.

Anyway, it was a pretty simple process. I showed the insurance adjuster the part that the deer knocked off. He took a couple of pictures and asked a mechanic from the body shop to check if there were any other problems. Then we went back to the office and he looked up the part in his database and prepared the estimate. It's the front shield that broke off. Fortunately, that's an inexpensive part. The repair estimate, including labor, is only about $75. I didn't think it would be that much cheaper to do elsewhere, so I decided to just go ahead and order the part.

I started doing my year-end tax planning this evening. While I was going down the list of securities, I noticed that a short duration bond fund I have was over 67% in mortgage-backed securities. Funny, it wasn't like that in previous quarters/years. I drilled down into its list of bond holdings and saw some dubious mortgage securities of the Alt-A variety. (Those are often no-doc or low-doc loans.) Even though that bond fund is not a significant part of my portfolio (last I checked, it was under 1%), I don't think there's any point in keeping it around if I have doubts. So I'll take care of that problem soon. Do take some time to check your bond funds if you own any. If there are any surprises, better to find out now before the sh*t really hits the fan!

Deer Damage

I set up an appointment through GEICO to get a damage estimate. I doubt it'll even exceed the deductible but I thought it would be a good idea to get that done anyway in case there is something I missed. One thing I noticed is GEICO has very few choices for auto body shops in my area. In their database, the auto body shops showing up in a search on my zip code are in Rahway, Croton-on-Hudson, and Middletown, all at least 40 miles away. There is one, however, in Elmwood Park, which is only 15 miles away. So I'll be going to that one Wednesday morning.

The other thing that happened (actually, it happened a few days ago) is I now have over 10,000 Where's George hits in New York state! Here are my top 10 states:
Rank State Hits
1. New Jersey (NJ) 10,907
2. New York (NY) 10,024
3. Pennsylvania (PA) 2,854
4. Connecticut (CT) 1,374
5. Massachusetts (MA) 955
6. Virginia (VA) 842
7. Florida (FL) 654
8. Maryland (MD) 630
9. California (CA) 494
10. North Carolina (NC) 351
Next five-figure state will be Pennsylvania, although that will take a few decades unless I move there. :)

Just finished a phone call to GEICO to initiate a damage claim. Hit a deer in Bensalem on my way to the last geocache of the day. I hit the deer in the last place I would expect to hit a deer: in a strip mall! I guess the deer had just gotten some Star"buck"s and was running off to the woods. It ran across Horizon Blvd right in front of my car. There was no time at all to react. I slammed on the brakes and the deer went under the car.

Worse yet, the deer somehow damaged two vehicles. It took out the underneath protective cover on the front right side of my car. It also bashed in the left headlight of the car that happened to be next to mine at that moment. Yeah, it was a big deer. It was a gruesome scene because there I was, in a stopped car in the middle of the strip mall road with a moaning deer below. And boy, did it moan. Obviously, trying to move the car forward wouldn't help. The car couldn't move in that direction anyway with a deer stuck under the wheel. So I tried to back up a little and suddenly, the deer sprang up and was gone in a flash.

We got a police officer from Bensalem PD to do a report. I took a look at the damage. To my untrained eye, nothing seemed broken apart from that protective cover. No dent in front. There was, however, deer blood and hair on the bumper.

Anyway, aside from the deer incident, it was an above-average day of geocaching. In spite of the shorter daylight and in spite of spending too much time on a few 4-star and 3-star geocaches, I managed to find 23 geocaches. (which I'll log online later) Also tried a restaurant in the Oxford Valley area that I hadn't tried before and stocked up on Wawa iced tea.
