According to the car thermometer, the temperature didn't go very much above 70°F today. The downside? Rain, heavy at times. I went to Orange County to visit new geocaches in the last few months since my last trip there. I also made a side trip into Matamoras and Milford, Pennsylvania, to find some geocaches that were placed for last week's tri-state geocaching event, which I didn't attend. Because of the unstable weather system, I did mostly geocaches that were short walks from parking. That turned out to be a good idea because it went from no rain to monsoon within seconds a few times today.

After finding "S.I.& B. 1917", I headed eastward to Walden/Wallkill to get out from under the rain clouds. There is a nice rail trail there that was good for 5 geocaches. Since there was no rain in that area, I tackled a few longer and more involved geocaches. Dinner was supposed to be at Long John Silver's in New Windsor but when I placed my order, the cashier told me that the order had to be "to go" even though I still had 10 minutes before they closed the dining area and even though the restaurant itself was still over an hour away from closing. (drive-thru closes later) For me, takeout is pointless because if I have to bring food home, I might as well just cook something from the store of food that I already have at home. So I canceled the order and left.

Anyway, I figured I'd show them by using Route 9W to go home and finding 3 geocaches at night! Okay, that probably didn't make any kind of statement. :) The last cache of the day was "Darkness on the Edge of Town". I found "Darkness" in the dark. Yes, there is method to this madness! Actually, it wasn't that difficult. The cache location is a tunnel under Route 9W. This tunnel is a one-lane road. I parked just outside the tunnel, walked back and forth through it with a flashlight, and found the cache on my second pass.

Got home, made dinner, and wrote a note to LJS corporate inquiring about restaurant hours policy. Also asked why this particular LJS closes a lot earlier in the evening than their other restaurants. I'm curious as to whether this is the result of a town curfew.

Goose Pond Mountain Area

Rainy day. About 70°F. Fortunately, the rain stopped in the early afternoon and didn't start again until the evening.

The first stop of the day was supposed to be at Goose Pond Mountain Area in Chester for "BluePigNinja Cache". However, when I got there, a lady told me that there was a fire on the boardwalk just 500 feet into the park. Then the firetrucks arrived. The information I got from them was that it was a cigarette butt fire and it had been smoldering for a while. Since it looked like they were going to be working on it for a while, I continued onwards to Port Jervis and Matamoras to do the rest of the geocaches on my list. Most of those geocaches were placed specially for the Tri-State Treasures TWO! geocaching event, which I missed because I was in Pittsburgh being a big fuzzy dog. :) The neat thing is they didn't remove those geocaches after the event so I can visit those any time.

In the evening, I returned to Goose Pond Mountain Area. I was a little worried about the geocache but luckily, it was at a different section of the boardwalk, more than 200 feet from the fire. So it was safe. I took a bunch of pictures of the damage. The boardwalk is still passable but they added some yellow tape to block off the burnt part.

Sunny day. Around 72°F. The New York State Thruway was all jammed up with Memorial Day weekend traffic, so I took Route 17 up to Orange County instead. As a bonus, there's no $1 toll going that way. Faster and toll-free. What's not to love?

First two geocaches were in Goshen, near the Heritage Trail in Orange County. Then I went over to the Milford/Matamoras area in Pennsylvania. I haven't been there in a while so there were new geocaches. Most of them were easy but "Where Poppies Blow and Crosses Shine II" had a very steep trail section.

Dinner was at Arby's in Middletown, NY. I tried their new chocolate turnover.

Took the afternoon off to go to the Tri-State Meet, Greet, and Eat geocaching event at the Grill Restaurant in Matamoras, PA. The event is in the evening but ordinarily, I wouldn't be able to make it there in time if I headed out after work. It was a buffet-style dinner although the dishes were fairly simple. We had fried chicken, carrots, coleslaw, baked potatoes, and dinner rolls.

After dinner, we (16 of us, assuming we didn't lose anyone before doing the head count midway through the hike... oops :) ) headed out to nearby Airport Park to do a brand-new night geocache. After parking at the north edge of the park, we followed a dirt path through the field to the starting point. Then we followed a trail of reflectors alongside the Delaware River to the cache location. I think that was almost a 1-mile round trip in the dark, but in a large group, it wasn't too difficult.

After that night cache, I did two more quick geocaches in Milford before heading home.
