Long Island
Jun. 16th, 2008 04:08 amCloudy day. A bit cooler than the day before. There was a threat of rain later in the afternoon but it never happened. I headed out to Long Island. Ran into macatac1961 between the first and second caches of the day, but didn't see any other geocachers the whole day. We did "Trail View Turnpike Transition" together.
The rest of the day was actually a bit annoying. Mosquitoes and ticks were out in full force. I'd already sprayed my pants with Permethrin so that part was covered but I still got ticks above the waistline. I picked ticks off my arms and flicked them out on the road as I went along. I don't think they'll survive Route 454.
Sunset is pretty late this time of the year, but I couldn't resist going for "Hydrant Hide" in the dark. I thought it was late enough by then that highway traffic would be free-flowing heading into Queens, but no such luck. Even at 10pm, there was a 10-mile traffic delay on Northern Parkway / Grand Central Parkway! Sunday night traffic just gets worse every year despite gas prices. Needless to say, dinner in Flushing was very late. Luckily, many restaurants in Flushing Chinatown stay open pretty late at night so that wasn't a problem.
