Another sunny day at around 80°F. Went to Long Island to seek some recently-placed geocaches.

I've done litter pickup on Long Island on previous trips. It's no special deed. I just figured that while I was looking for geocaches, I might as well pick up and dispose of trash that I see. This time though, I came prepared and I brought an extra bundle of plastic bags to put the trash in. However, I did not anticipate that I would fill up four bags so quickly! Seriously, so many public areas on Long Island are litter-strewn messes. Litterbugs have no shame and the situation only gets worse every time because once there's litter on the ground, people think that adding more litter is no big deal. Well, at least a few geocache sites are now clean.

I turned around and headed back a bit earlier in the evening so that I would have time to pick up a quick geocache in Queens before dinner in Flushing Chinatown. I see that Sentosa finally raised menu prices by a dollar or so per item. It's not such a bargain now compared to similar restaurants in New Jersey but it's still reasonable.

Another hot day but it rained late in the afternoon. I went to the Pocono Mountains area. I was interested in seeking the "Trout Trails & Tales" series of geocaches that latitude55 had placed. Each Trout Trails geocache is near one of 15 decorated trout sculptures. I was a little disappointed, however, that I wasn't able to see some of the trout sculptures. These sculptures are movable and at some locations, they store the sculptures away when the place closes for the day or for the weekend.

Late in the afternoon, they kept cutting into the local radio station with a weather emergency warning. According to the warning, there was going to be penny-sized hail, strong winds, and heavy rain. They also advised to stay inside a strong building and away from the window. Perhaps the warning was more dire than it had to be. In fact, I saw only the heavy rain and that came later in the evening. Nevertheless, I was a little concerned about the potential for floods, so I traveled further up the highlands. Then, when the heavy rain started, I had an early dinner at KFC/LJS in Mt. Pocono. It took less than an hour for the rain to slow to a drizzle, so I tacked on 4 more quick geocaches before heading home.

Heard two people complaining about inflation today. When I was at Turkey Hill in Stroudsburg, the cashier asked "Why does everything take money?" I was going to explain how money arose as a medium of exchange to improve upon barter when I realized he probably meant "Why does everything take so much money?" Okay... Later, at KFC/LJS in Mt. Pocono, the guy ahead of me ordered a bunch of items and his total came up to $27.91. He asked "Why is it so much?" See? It doesn't matter that Bernanke is in denial. People can clearly see that there is inflation -- serious inflation -- going on and it's only a matter of time before they start burning Federal Reserve Chairman effigies. (if they can still afford the kerosene to start the fire, that is)

This afternoon, I went to Quiznos in Ramsey to get my free birthday chocolate chip cookie. I also got a baja chicken sub to go with it. I have more birthday coupons from local merchants, but in truth, not all those coupons are worth redeeming. I'll use the ones that are worthwhile. A funny thought occurred to me: The word "baja" in Bahasa Malaysia means fertilizer. Since many American restaurant chains have expanded overseas, I wonder if any of them are offering baja chicken or baja anything, for that matter, back in the old country.

I have to seriously consider transferring my account out of Ameritrade Izone. A few days ago, I received a letter from them saying that they recently discovered unauthorized code -- a security breach allowing an outsider to retrieve certain customer information -- in their systems. However, it turns out that an IT security expert warned them about the problem as far back as January 2006, which is not what I would call "recent". (thanks to Consumerist for the link) Whether TD Ameritrade was attempting to cover up the security breach or just exceptionally tardy at alerting its clients, it does not look good for them. Early 2006 was also when I started receiving stock scam spam on the email address I was using at Izone. Fortunately, it was a disposable email address, so I merely disabled it and started using a different one. Anyway, where do we go from here? I wonder if Zecco has gotten past its growing pains yet.
