mortonfox: (No Parking)
I was home this morning until the mid-afternoon, so I noticed that the UPS driver no longer asks for a signature when he delivers a package. He knocked on my front door and left immediately. When I opened the door, I didn't see anything on the doorstep so I was momentarily puzzled. Then I saw that he had hidden the package behind a bush. It's just like geocaching. :)

Anyway, that package was the nüvi 205W returning from Garmin. So it took just over a week to get it back. That's not bad at all. It was only frustrating when I had to work with Garmin support to get them to see that it was a hardware problem and not fixable at my end. Once the GPS is in their hands, there's no fuss and turnaround is fairly quick. Also, as is usually the case, they didn't fix the one I sent in. They sent me a replacement instead, which is fine by me because the old nüvi already had a couple of scratches on it.

A few months ago, utility workers came by and dug up half the sidewalk (the part that used to be grass) to lay down pipes. They didn't do a good job filling it up again and it was uneven. Also, they left the end of my driveway as dirt so that's what I've been driving on every day getting in and out. Well, they came back with their heavy machinery on Friday and covered the rest of the sidewalk in dirt. Unfortunately, they did that before a heavy rain so it's a bit messy. I hope they'll pave over it this time instead of replanting grass so it'll be maintenance-free.

Most of the morning was spent calling Garmin phone support on the nüvi freezing problem. There was a hold time of about half an hour. Then one fellow answered the phone and asked me to try a few things. He couldn't figure out the problem, so he transferred me to another department and I was on hold for another half hour. That's almost as bad as Verizon support! Second fellow checked the software and configuration via remote access (Good thing there wasn't anything NSFW in a browser window. :) ) but couldn't do anything either. So he sent me an RMA number and a shipping address. I packed the GPS into a box and went to the nearest post office to ship it back to Garmin. And so, now I wait.

While waiting, I could still go geocaching with the handheld GPS. After all, I used to navigate pretty well by eyeballing that tiny map on the handheld. So I went to Carousel Park in Wilmington for Not just folklore and Hang-Out. I'd been there before, so I knew where to park to get close to the first cache. Then I took a walk to the second one even though there's a closer place to park. It's only 0.3 of a mile. The second cache was supposedly difficult when the foliage is out, but I was able to see it after looking around for a bit.

Last cache of the day was Marshallton Tour. I don't usually do multi-stage caches when I'm on a cache marathon so I save these for lazy summer days. It's a fairly interesting tour of two historical sites, followed by a simple cache in the woods.

Only had time for one geocache between errands this afternoon but it's an interesting one. It's in Fort Dupont State Park in Delaware City and it's under Route 9. Yes, I drove to the end of the state park and found a dirt road under the elevated part of the road. Not sure how much further it goes but you can drive on it for at least the half mile or so to the cache site.

Then I went to Riverfront Shell in Wilmington to use a gas coupon. Before this one, I'd never received a direct mail ad from a specific gas station. This coupon is for a dollar off the fill-up but this discount is offset by their gas price, which is a bit higher than the lowest price in this area. Even so, I figure I saved about 50 cents over BJ's Wholesale gas on this one fill-up.

My nüvi 205W has developed a annoying glitch. This problem doesn't actually affect the basic task of navigation but I can't add anything to it. Attempting to copy a custom POI file to this GPS causes it to freeze. Same thing happens when I try to update the software. If I add or delete favorites, it doesn't retain the changes on power-off. It also doesn't remember its last position and always starts up pointing to somewhere in Lititz. (which is where the problem started) I can still get it to route to geocaches by entering coordinates manually but that's not as convenient as adding a POI file. I've been in contact with Garmin email support and will call them tomorrow morning to see if I can get it repaired or replaced. (There is still about half a year left on the product warranty.)

I picked up a Garmin nüvi 205W at Target last week because it was on sale. The price was about the same as a map upgrade so I figured I might as well buy the GPS to get the map. Of course, my first thought after getting the nüvi was how to use it for geocaching. As some may have picked up from my Twitter, I've been tinkering with it, trying various settings, etc. I took it out on a few geocaching runs to see how it works and to refine the settings. Here's how I set it up now:

After running gcmerge, I have a combined .loc file for geocaches from a number of areas. At first, I used POI Loader to load the data onto the GPS, but I preferred something a bit more command-line driven and scriptable, so I switched to GPSBabel.
    gpsbabel -i geo -f geocaches.loc -o garmin_gpi,bitmap="cache.bmp",
      category="Geocaches",units=s,proximity=0.6,descr -F geocaches.gpi
This command (all on a single line) converts the .loc file to Garmin GPI format. After running that command, I connect the GPS to the computer. The computer sees the GPS as a mass storage device so all I need to do is copy geocaches.gpi over to D:\Garmin\POI, where D: is the drive letter assigned to the GPS. That's it!

After that, waypoints show up on the GPS in the Custom POIs section:

List of POIs

I can select any one of those, hit "Go!", and the GPS will route me to the closest road to the waypoint. (Not always the best way to approach the cache but I can usually figure it out from there.) GPSBabel's "descr" option is the magic sauce that sets the POIs to display the cache name under each waypoint ID. "cache.bmp" is a 24x24 icon I borrowed from Gary Hayman's nüvi tips website.

cache icon on map

It's the yellow square with an "X" in the above screenshot. This icon can be replaced with any 24x24 or smaller BMP image but I find that simpler icons look better on the map display.

And finally, "units=s,proximity=0.6" sets a proximity alert of 0.6 miles on each POI. Here, it does nothing other than make the icons show up on the map when I drive within 0.6 miles of the waypoints. It's also possible to add sounds and popup messages but I'd rather miss a cache or two than add more distractions.

Got a package from Garmin this afternoon. It has only been 8 days since I sent out the malfunctioning GPS, so that's a pretty quick turnaround. It's not the same GPS though. It has a different serial number so it's got to be a refurbished unit from their repair facility. I'll use it this weekend and see how it goes.

Aside from cash and prizes, Shoppers' Hotline also offers special coupons to participating members. I have to admit though that I hadn't been checking their coupon section. The reason for that is the first time I took a look at their coupons, which was over a year ago, I saw only coupons for high-end retailers, which are of no use to me. Last night, I took a look and saw that they had added Burger King coupons. Great! I printed out a coupon for BK Big Fish and used it this evening. S.H.'s deal seems to be 4 coupons a month, my choice, so if I plan ahead, those will be useful for meals whenever I'm out a bit late running errands.

Wrote a Top Posters script for the 10 Million Photos Flickr group. It produces reports like this one. Most of the code I needed was already in the older 10 Million Photos stats script, so all I had to do was reuse a few functions and add some report-generating code. Initial reviews from the 10 Million Photos regulars are encouraging.

Commerce Bank shareholders approved the TD Bank acquisition with 97% in favor, so if nothing goes seriously wrong, I'll get cash and TD stock in early April. Not so much though, as I'd already cut my CBH holdings way back when in anticipation of the credit crisis. In addition, I got cash out of the TAQA-Primewest deal last month, so the only merger I'm still waiting on is Metal Management - Sims Group. (both scrap metal recyclers)

It rained lightly today, but there were new geocaches, so in the afternoon, I went out to Mahwah to do Stonehedge. I knew the location because it was in the same strip mall as Moe's, a restaurant to which I no longer go because the cashier slipped up and then had an argument with me. Anyway, I was off my game today. It should've been simple but I started looking in the wrong place and took longer than expected to find the cache. I met TwistedT while I was there.

On the way out of the strip mall, I nearly had a collision with a UPS truck that was going around a corner a bit too fast on a rainy day. I think it's supposed to be "What can Brown do for you?" not "What can Brown do to you?" :)

A news reporter from Herald News was at the Sopranos/Hitman geocaching event and pre-event hike on Saturday and here's the news article. I thought that was a fair portrayal of the activity. Of course, wooded areas account for only a portion of all geocaching locations because there are also urban cache hides, some of which I go for after dark to kill time before dinner, but we don't have to tell the press everything. :)

On a slightly different note, I'm sending the GPS receiver back to Garmin for warranty repair. It freezes up now and then, requiring removal of the batteries to reset it. I made the arrangements with Product Support using their web contact form and I'll mail it to them tomorrow. For the next few weeks, I'll use the spare GPS, which is the exact same eTrex Legend HCx model because I'd planned ahead and ordered another one from Amazon a while back.
