Sunny, 30-34°F. Had a busy morning because I was doing some return-to-work preparations. Actually, I was busy in the evening too; I came back home for a bit to take care of a few things before going out again at night on an errand run. My only goal for geocaching today was to do the last two geocaches in the Delaware Geotrail series. These are the two toughest ones because of the steep uphill climb and tougher still right now because of snow on the ground, but I did those anyway just to finish the series. After that, I did some new geocaches in the Powerlines Trail series before calling it a day. Not too challenging, except it was a lot of walking in the snow and on icy ATV trails.

Dinner was onion rings at Arby's in New Castle. Well okay, it's not really dinner since I ate at home before going out again. I got the onion rings as a snack after shopping for groceries.

Sunny, 28-34°F. After having breakfast at the local IHOP (on their menu, that's the "Split Decision"), I headed down to Cape Henlopen and Bethany Beach in Sussex County to finish off the remaining Delaware Geotrail caches in that area. Of course, I'd already qualified for the geocoin a week ago but I thought it would be fun to do the rest of the caches in that series too. And those were interesting locations. In particular, "DGT Bethany Beach" has a good view across the bay to Ocean City, Maryland. I was inspired by that view to cross the state line and find a bunch of geocaches in O.C. This beach resort town has plenty of parking during the off-season when all the beach house areas are practically deserted. So I had no issues parking near each geocache site. Better yet, no one was around to interfere with the search.

The sun set but there was still plenty of time before dinner, so I went back north to Dewey Beach and Rehoboth Beach to find some geocaches at night. "Shelter Me" is an interesting navigation challenge. For some reason, the automotive GPS told me to go there by driving on the boardwalk! I had to adjust the destination a bit to get directions to the nearest dead-end street instead. This area too seems rather quiet during the off-season, especially at night, but I didn't linger because it was already getting rather cold.

Dinner was at Hardee's in Middletown. I had BBQ and Ranch chicken tender wraps. I was the last customer of the night but I did finish shortly before closing time.

Cloudy, 32-34°F. There was snow in the weather forecast for this afternoon. I planned to hit a couple of nearby Delaware Geotrail caches and be back before the snow started. Among other places, I went to Lums Pond State Park, where there were 3 DGT caches. Well, 2pm came and the snow still hadn't started so I went to White Clay Creek State Park and kept on geocaching. It was a bit of a hike for 3 caches but the trail didn't have any especially steep stretches so snow and ice on the ground weren't an issue.

At 3:30pm, there was finally a bit of snowfall. So I headed off to Churchmans Crossing to do some errands because I wanted to finish those and get home before the roads got really snow-covered. Then the snow stopped again, so I did one final cache, "Green Acres". I was pretty lucky with this one. It seems there usually are barking dogs near the cache site but for some reason, the dogs were absent when I got there. So I could search for the cache without interference. The snow really only started after I got home. So it didn't pose a problem and I could've done a full day of geocaching, but it's good to have some flexibility in one's plans.

Sunny, 28-31°F. I figured I might as well do the nearby Delaware Geotrail geocaches in Wilmington at some point, so I did those today. The one at Brandywine Zoo was actually the closest to home but I'd been doing the farther-away caches first. There was still snow on the ground in Wilmington. For the first four caches, that wasn't a problem. But at the last 3 caches, my route got more and more slippery. "DGT Ramsey Road" wasn't too bad yet. There was a short downhill stretch of trail that was icy, but that was it. "Off The Brandywine Trail" was up a steep hill. I climbed on the snow-covered slope, hoping to not slide back. "Dude, It's Green!" was the hardest of the lot because it's on a 45-degree slope and the snow had partially turned to ice. I held on to rocks, small plants, anything that was available, to keep myself from sliding back down the hill as I crawled upwards. Of course, after I was done with that cache, getting back down was easy. I just let go and slid downhill. One good thing about the snow is it's clean. If I went for that cache at any other time of the year, I would've gotten my pants really muddy crawling up and down that steep slope.

After that, I went to Quiznos in Claymont and had a California Club overloaded with peppers and pickles. I don't go to this sandwich chain much any more, although I'm not sure why because my argument was only with one manager at one particular store. I guess in my mind, that experience has tainted the brand.

Sunny, 28-34°F. I left home this morning with the intention of doing a bunch more Delaware Geotrail caches. So I got the New Castle County DGT caches to the south of my place and all the remaining Kent County DGT caches. Then I continued geocaching until it was a bit past sunset and time to head back. The last two caches were in Greenwood. Looks like Kent County got more snow than New Castle. Their biggest problem seems to snowdrifts on the roads. After snow removal, the wind blew snow back onto the road. So when I was driving the backroads, I had to slow down numerous times for snow patches. On the way to Killens Pond, I came across a road so snow-covered that I couldn't tell which part was road and which part was field or ditch or whatever. I decided to turn the car around and try another route before things got really bad!

I only ran into one geocacher today. He was at Killens Pond State Park and he'd just completed the two DGT caches there as I arrived. At "Fisher Bridge Falls", I met two friendly locals who already knew about the cache. They told me they'd been giving hints to geocachers who couldn't find that cache. They were waiting to see if I needed help too but I found it on my own. I didn't think it was that difficult a cache but I happened to have to right idea and just needed to be systematic in my search.

Dinner was chicken tenders at Hardee's in Harrington. By now, I've had chicken tenders at half a dozen Hardee's, but this location seems to have good chicken tenders. They're also almost within range of free wi-fi internet. Too bad the restaurant can't be moved a bit up the road. :)

Sunny, 33-38°F. Since I started doing the Delaware Geocaching Trail yesterday, I thought I'd continue with the Kent County part of the quest. It was a good day for doing that and I ran into other geocachers along the way too. After getting 8 DGT caches for Kent County, it was only 1pm so I thought I'd try to do Sussex County too. Well, that was almost too ambitious because of the driving distances involved. I managed to squeeze in the 8th Sussex DGT cache only minutes before sunset!

Dinner was chicken tenders at Hardee's in Millsboro. After that, I headed up US-113 intending to go home. When I stopped for a geocache along US-113, I realized that I'd left my hat at Hardee's. I returned to Hardee's and yes, the restaurant folks did find it and were keeping it for me. After that, I decided not to travel US-113 for a third time, so I crossed over to US-13 for a change in scenery. (not that there's much to see at night) That, of course, meant that I did a bunch more geocaches along both the connector road and US-13. I picked only geocaches that I thought were doable at night but there were still quite a number of those. Got home really late as a result but hey, I might as well make the most of a trip down south!

Sunny, 38°F. The Delaware Geocaching Trail has started up again. The last time the Tourism Office did this was when I was in the middle of moving to the state. It's good to see that they're doing another one. The game this time is to find 8 DGT geocaches in each of the 3 counties and fill in your DGT passport. Then send it in to get a prize. Because I had a busy morning, I started late today but I still did enough caches to satisfy the requirement for New Castle County. I went towards the north and northeast parts of the county and the 8 caches were all within a few miles of each other. Met up with a few other geocachers who were doing this series too.

Sunny, 55-60°F. Since DST ended, I've either been waking up very early or very late. Today was one of the early wake-up days so I decided to do another foray into southern Delaware. Just like Friday morning, I started with a Hardee's breakfast. (although I did find one geocache first) This time, it was at Hardee's in Milford and I had an omelet biscuit. I don't think the Milford Hardee's is as good as the Middletown Hardee's. Their biscuit sandwiches come out a bit flat. I guess I'm now a fast food snob. :)

After breakfast, I geocached in Milford and then Millsboro, Harbeson, Long Neck, and Dagsboro. The main objective for today was to find "DGT Nanticoke Indian Museum". It's the last one in the DGT series that I hadn't visited and the reason for that is from US-113, it's about 6 miles out of the way. Well, today I sucked it up and made that trip up Route 24. After that cache, I found a bunch more in that area. An interesting one was "Beezey's Easies - Metal Zoo", a multistage cache with metal giraffes along the way.

Dinner was at Hardee's in Middletown. I had a 1/3-lb cheeseburger combo. There's still one Hardee's in this state that I haven't visited and that's the one in Seaford. Sounds like an idea for another Southern DE trip. :)
