I'd actually been planning to go to the September edition of "Triple Tuesday Pints & Patties - 2012" since a month ago when I noticed that this month's event was going to fall on my birthday. These Central Jersey monthly geocaching gatherings are usually small but still worth attending if I happen to have the day off.

I started the day with a free Original Grand Slam at Denny's in Carneys Point. I've never tried this Denny's because admittedly, I had a bias against restaurants in truck stops because I've been to some bad ones. (This one is at a Flying J Travel Plaza.) I have to say though that I was surprised at how spacious and comfortable this particular Denny's was. Also, service was quite good and they have free wi-fi internet.

It was a rainy and windy day but I found a bunch of geocaches anyway in the South Bound Brook area. I was glad the rain held off long enough for a few short walks in that area. In the evening, I went to Fuddruckers in Bridgewater for the event. I had a 1/3-lb burger with fixings.

Sunny, 50-60°F. I thought I'd go somewhere a bit different on the last day of 2011. Well, it's different for me anywhere since I rarely go to the Baltimore area. (That was only my second time there in 2011.) That $6 toll before the Susquehanna makes me think twice before going past Cecil County, but I digress. I started the day at the "Anchors Aweigh!" geocaching event at Nautilus Diner in Timonium. I didn't feel like having actual breakfast food so I ordered gyro with fried onions. Since I hadn't been going to geocaching events in Maryland, I didn't know anyone there. Funny thing is though, geocaching seems to be pretty much the same anywhere. I heard quite a bit of intriguing geo-drama listening in on the conversations, but it's not so different from what I've heard at geocaching events in Lancaster, Bucks County, New Jersey, and Long Island. It's the usual cases of people cheating to get FTFs, signing each other in, and stealing geocaches.

After the geocaching event, I went and found geocaches in Lutherville-Timonium, Towson, Northwood, and Pikesville. I didn't actually do all the geocaches I could've done because it was time for dinner. When I went to the White Marsh area for dinner though, I didn't count on most restaurants shutting down early for New Year's Eve. Denny's in Nottingham was still open, however, so I had a Holiday Turkey Melt. After that, I did two more geocaches in White Marsh / Rossville before going home. The last one I did was "Finds for Each Day of the Year Challenge-4 Seasons", a challenge cache with the prerequisite of finding at least one geocache on each of the 366 days of the year. I qualified a long time ago, so it was a snap but I thought it was a good one to close the year on.

Cloudy, 65-70°F. The day got off to a quick start when I received a new geocache notification just when I was about to head out. By coincidence, "Swim Fan" was just up the road from Denny's in Newark, where I was planning to have my free birthday Grand Slam. How convenient! So I found that cache, got FTF on it, and went to Denny's. I had a Grand Slam with eggs, whole wheat toast, bacon, and sausages.

I didn't plan on doing too much today, so I went geocaching around Central Delaware. First, I went to Collins Beach, which used to be a well-known beach resort but now has abandoned houses and lots of wildflowers. (Apparently, if these are in bloom in my backyard, they are also in bloom at the wildlife refuge.) After Collins Beach, I did a few geocaches in Smyrna and a few more in the western Kent County countryside. Hopped over to Maryland for a few geocaches (WMA 1, 2, and 3) and even did one geocache at the state line. I thought it was funny that I actually parked right on the state line but didn't realize it until I went back to my car and saw the rear wheel next to the painted boundary line on the road.

"Cat-A-Log Cache" was the problem geocache of the day. It's a two-stage cache but the first stage got washed away quite a while ago and was never replaced, or so I gathered from reading the online logs. I thought I'd try to find the final stage anyway even without the coordinates. So I took a walk along the road and spotted the cache lying in the ditch! Well, lucky day! It appears a recent flood carried the cache out from where it was hidden and for once, actually made it easier to find.

For dinner, I returned to Newark to claim my free birthday entree at Famous Dave's. I had the two-meat combo with beef brisket, beer-battered cod, green beans, and fries.

Sunny, 90°F. I woke up early for a 90-minute drive to Denny's in Allentown for the LVGC Breakfast in the Valley IV geocaching event. Since I enjoyed the last LVGC breakfast event in early June, I thought I'd do it again. This was a good event too. Only real problem was Denny's couldn't handle our crowd so the food was a bit slow in coming out, but I didn't mind too much. I had the Ultimate Skillet.

After that, we (Wizard1626, SAJSKI1, Catching Caches, ST.FU68, Linda.Cache, and I) went as a group to the Saucon Rail Trail to hit a new series of geocaches. It was a 3-mile hike. We left a few cars at one end of the trail and car-pooled to the other end of the trail so we wouldn't have to walk back on the return trip. It was a fun group activity. Some of the geocaches were easy and some were difficult but we found them all and everyone in the group was the first to spot at least one of the caches. After the hike, we went to Rita's in Hellertown for a water ice break. I had a cantaloupe Italian ice. Then we did a multicache, "Saucon Creek Multi", in Hellertown before going our separate ways.

I met Pino at the LVGC breakfast event. I hadn't seen him in years but I actually knew him from Where's George way back when and I used to go to his pizza place whenever I was in Lehigh Valley. What's interesting is I told him about geocaching years ago but he didn't try it back then. Somehow, something clicked in the past year and he suddenly became quite active in geocaching. I found some of his geocaches this afternoon in Hellertown, Bethlehem, and Fountain Hill. On the other hand, he has stopped doing Where's George, so I guess it's a case of shifting preferences. In the evening, I visited Antonio's Pizza in Easton to see him again and have two slices of pizza. Just like old times. (I also found the two geocaches, one in front of and one behind the pizza place, of course.)

Woke up early on Friday so I went out and did 4 geocaches within a few miles of the hotel. Those were all cemetery caches that I couldn't do the night before because most cemeteries have rules against going in there at night. Returned to the hotel in time for Furfright opening ceremony. Then I went to the "How to make a fursuit head" panel for a bit. I probably won't use the information, other than for making repairs, but the panelist was funny and entertaining.

Then I went out for another 4 geocaches. I used the algorithm of doing geocaches until I saw a place to have lunch, which unfortunately turned out to be Taco Bell in Newington. (but I had coupons! :) ) Returned to the hotel and fursuited for a few hours, wandering around convention space. I was surprised at how much attention the otter got; more than any other fursuit I've worn at a con. Also went around surprising some of my friends who didn't know yet that I had an otter suit.

For dinner, I went six miles from the hotel to Hometown Buffet in Wethersfield. This was yet another coupon-driven decision. There was plenty of fish. After leaving Hometown Buffet, I noticed that there were 2 geocaches between the restaurant and the highway ramp, so I found those too. So it was 3 square meals on Friday and 3 sets of geocaches. :) Returned to the hotel and fursuited some more. Went to the dance for a bit before deciding I should get to sleep.

And Saturday... )

First stop of the day was to Denny's to get my free birthday Grand Slam. In the "Build Your Own Grand Slam" menu item, you get to pick four items from their list of breakfast foods. I got pancakes, eggs, bacon, and whole wheat toast. It was a leisurely affair. I didn't get there really early to begin with, so "breakfast" ended at 1pm.

After that, I went for some geocaches that were not too far away. "Child's Play" is an old cache in the Claymont area that I'd been meaning to do for a while but never bothered to take the exit off of I-495 until this afternoon. The other 3 geocaches are recently-placed ones. "Dude Man Yo's #1" is in a weird location at the door of a converted warehouse building. I suspect the cache owner either works at or has some connection with the design studio whose door that is.

In the afternoon, I discovered that the grass seed patch closer to my back door had germinated into tiny blades of grass that stood straight up. Really cute. No idea what's happening to the other patch though. I guess it's easier to grow grass in the shaded area because that part of the yard doesn't get quite as dry. Also did some weeding since I was out there looking. Yes, I know. Doing work on my birthday...

In the evening, I went to Delaware Furbowl XX. It was the same itinerary as the previous DE Furbowl: dinner at East King Buffet followed by bowling at AMF Price Lanes. This time, I wasted no time getting what I wanted, hence sushi and ice cream on the same plate! (I added peanuts and an egg custard for nutrition. :) ) At the bowling portion of the event, I wore the Kinzer coyote fursuit. Still not so good at bowling but I did get two strikes, one spare, and a bunch of 7s and 8s.

Sunny and 46°F. I had a coupon for a free burger and fries for joining the Denny's Rewards mailing list. Of course, I had to make a day of it so I threw in some geocaching and a bit shopping too.

First stop was Glasgow Park to get two geocaches that were both about half a mile from the parking area. I was surprised that the park, even the wooded areas, was almost free of snow. Next, I got two geocaches on the Mason-Dixon Trail. That section of the trail crossed a residential area, where I parked, and followed a powerline right of way. Then came two caches in Deerborne Woods. Both were quick caches in small parks. Then I got two geocaches in Iron Hill Park but decided to leave a third one for another time.

By that time, it was well past lunchtime (a bit after 5pm, actually) so I went to Denny's to have the burger and fries. The last time I went to a Denny's was many years ago, back when Anthrocon was at the Adam's Mark and Denny's was just next door. I went just once and was so unimpressed with the service that I never went to that Denny's again. So I arrived at the Newark Denny's with very low expectations. Well, surprise! It's actually a pretty good restaurant. Granted, there were only 3 customers there this afternoon, so I have no idea if service is worse when they're busy, but I wouldn't mind going back.

After that, I went to downtown Wilmington for one more cache. I figured street parking wouldn't be a problem after working hours and that was indeed the case. "Pico Parking" is at the top of a high-rise parking garage. Since I didn't have a parking pass, I parked on the street and took the elevator up. Pretty simple.
