Yantacaw Brook Park

It was a rainy day but by evening, the rain had stopped. I thought I had plenty of time for both geocaches but a few miles down the Garden State Parkway, I got stuck in a traffic delay caused by an accident at around milepost 157. By that time, the affected vehicles had already been towed from the accident site but the residual delay still cost me about half an hour. I'd thought about giving up and turning around but I pressed ahead anyway.

I got to Stumped? shortly before dusk. This geocache is in Yantacaw Brook Park in Montclair. This section is a fairly open park, mostly field with a few trees. The cache site, however, was uncomfortably close to the back window of one of the houses so I hope no one was looking when I picked up the cache. Coordinates were off by about 80 feet (and the cache owner admitted as much in the cache description) but there was only one hiding spot like that in the area so it wasn't difficult.

Then I went to Clarks Pond Nature Preserve in Bloomfield for Finding Your Way Home. It was already the darker side of dusk by the time I got there but I didn't think it would be much of a problem. In contrast to the previous park, this one is a wooded area and the ground was muddy so I had to be careful where I stepped. Also, the coordinates I had were off by a bit. When I checked the cache page on my cell phone, I saw the corrected coordinates and those helped a lot. After that, I went back to Paramus, to Boston Market for a chicken pot pie.

Watsessing Park

This evening, I thought I would go get a geocache before the rain started, so I went for Snoopin' Around The Park 1. It was at Watsessing Park in Bloomfield, a typical Essex County urban park with paved jogging path and big ditch. This geocache was a very easy find so I had plenty of time afterwards to go to Garden State Plaza to pay a bill and have some pseudo-Thai food.

My camera is still working despite the lack of a shutter. However, the first bid I placed at eBay won that auction so I'll be getting a replacement camera of the same model.

I tried to summon up an appropriate amount of outrage over the Housing Bailout Bill but I'm just worn out. There's nothing I can say about it that I haven't said before, in this journal and on Twitter, FriendFeed, and Wise Bread. I knew it would get to the point where the government would absorb all the worthless mortgage securities by adding on to the national debt and printing money. Why? Because it is politically expedient to throw more credit and money at a problem (and distribute the pain to everyone subtly via inflation) than to step aside and actually let people suffer the consequences of their actions. Responsibility? What's that?

Let's start with the $10.6 trillion debt ceiling, a new milestone in profligacy. There was a time in history when legislators were gun shy about raising the debt ceiling. These days, it's almost an afterthought buried in a 600-page bill. Even that does not worry me as much as the unlimited line of credit given to the US Treasury to buy Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac securities. They'll use that only in the event that a rescue is needed, which is no comfort because I'm certain there'll be rescues upon rescues coming. In total, we taxpayers could be on hook for up to $5 trillion in mortgage securities, which is a staggering amount even if only a fraction of that is bad. And that fraction could be as high as 90%!

Brookdale Park

Another sunny and warm day. In the evening, I went to Brookdale Park in Bloomfield for The Curse of the Brookdale Triangle. This geocache wasn't really a curse. It was actually quite easy. The only thing that may pose some difficulty is it is located in an area with a bit of brush in a park that is otherwise open field, but there is already a social trail of flattened weeds leading to the cache site.

As I recall, there is a rule about gas stations in Garden State Parkway service areas only being allowed to change their prices once a week. So, while a typical gas station in northern New Jersey now sells regular gasoline at $3.39/gallon, all the Lukoil stations on the Parkway are still at $3.17. The result: A long line of cars at the Bloomfield service area waiting for a fill-up! I'm sure that gas station will run out of gas before long. Anyway, I finished up this little evening trip with a Subway tuna footlong at Paramus Park Mall. Yes, it's still $5 and looking like even more of a bargain every day.

When Flickr added video earlier this month, I thought it was a nice enhancement but not really a big deal; just another form of visual expression. I posted a few videos myself. Well, tonight, I stumbled across these two threads in the 10 Million Photos group. I wondered what that was all about, so I did a bit of looking around and found out that the Flickr video protest had spread through many Flickr discussion groups. Just what we need. More controversy and drama. It's all pretty strange to me because I don't see anything wrong with videos. We already have bad photos -- bad porn photos even -- on Flickr, so I don't see how videos are going to be the death of Flickr as some of those commenters seem to be saying. A year from now, we'll look back on the Flickr video controversy and wonder what the fuss was about.

Brookdale Park

Just in time for the warmer weather, my new geocaching outfit. Like it? :) Okay, April Fool's is over so I'll explain. This amusing "Geo Diva" tanktop is a mystery prize I got at a geocaching event a while ago. I only just got around to giving it away while doing some Spring cleaning.

This evening, I went to the Cache-Cam geocache. It's in Brookdale Park in Bloomfield. Very easy one. I do remember another geocache at or near this spot way back when, but it's nice to revisit this part of the park.

Last week, while doing some Google Local searches, I noticed that there's a new Penang Malaysian restaurant in Lodi. I thought I'd stop there and try it on my way home from Bloomfield. It looks a bit more upscale -- more like a coffee house or lounge than an ethnic restaurant -- than the other Penang restaurants in Philly and Jersey. I had nasi lemak, which is rice flavored with coconut milk and served with various curried and spicy items. It's really not too different from this nasi lemak I had at Sentosa in Flushing on Sunday. Aside from price, that is. There is a lot of competition among restaurants in Flushing Chinatown, so Sentosa is significantly cheaper. Of course, since I don't live in Queens, bridge tolls on the way to Flushing kill that deal unless I have other reasons to go to Queens or Long Island. Anyway, the Lodi Penang may be an option for Chinese New Year dinner if they'll be having New Year specials.

Brookdale Park

It was a rainy day, but I went to Brookdale Park in Bloomfield for the Buster's Spot geocache anyway. It rained on my way there and it rained on my way back. Fortunately, the rain actually stopped long enough while I was there for me to go and find the geocache. After that, I had a takeout spicy chicken sandwich and cajun fries from Popeye's in Paramus.

I made a list of geocaches in and around Waterbury for next week. While there are quite a number of geocaches there, they aren't as plentiful as they were in the Windsor area, where Furfright used to be held. As always, I'll see when I get there.

I got a new batch of postcards from the nearby Parkway Service Area for Postcrossing. I actually do not enjoy going there, so I bought 30 cards this time. That ought to last a while.

Also got the zipper grease today. Couldn't find that item at any of the craft stores in my area, so I ordered from an online store.
