wlj-4 Sunny and 70°F. Went geocaching in north and then northeast Philadelphia today. The goal for today was to do a couple of geocaches in the Fishtown area and then wander off, hitting more geocaches around the north part of the city. What I saw is this part of the city is home to some rather quirky outdoor sculpture installations, including a dodecahedron, a pink tank, and a bunch of tile animals. Lots of murals too. The downsides: urban decay, abandoned and boarded-up buildings, graffiti, vandalism, and trash everywhere.

Finished the day with a food and grocery run to Philadelphia Chinatown. Had a Cantonese Chow Fun at Banana Leaf to add to the food photoset. Discovered that Wan Sheng Supermarket has its own parking lot behind the store but didn't need to use it as street parking in that area is free on Sunday anyway. It's useful to remember that for other days of the week though. Also, I'm surprised I missed a detail like that on my previous 5 visits to this Chinese supermarket.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park Sunny and 70°F. Had no real plan for today, other than to find some geocaches in Philadelphia and then go to Philadelphia Chinatown. What ended up happening is we went to FDR Park in South Philly, then to Gentilhommiere, the house of Girard, and then to beautiful Bartram's Garden and a few other places in West Philly, then to Eastern State Penitentiary and a few other locations in North/Northwest Philly, before entering Chinatown. So it turned out to be a day of geocache-directed sightseeing around the city.

After doing some shopping in Chinatown, we went to Banana Leaf for an early dinner. We had nasi lemak, roti canai, wonton mee, and curry tofu with rice. I would definitely have the nasi lemak again because there are a lot of interesting flavors in that one dish.

uapenn-2 Cloudy and 50°F. Needed to get some supplies in Philadelphia Chinatown again so we geocached along the way. Started with a cache near the airport, then went through Prospect Park, Holmes, and Western Philadelphia (through the university area) to get to Center City.

Parking near Chinatown was tough because it's free in that area on Sunday, so that's when everyone wants to park there. Found a parking space a few blocks from the center of Chinatown after driving all the way around looking. Dinner was at Banana Leaf again to try more of their menu items. We had java mee, chicken rendang rice, and chicken with ginger and scallions.

longlost-3 Cloudy and 60-64°F. The First State Challenge series of geocaches was released today and that was the perfect excuse to go out and do a few of those. Of course, since I was there, I also got a few older geocaches that I hadn't yet done. Other geocachers were out and about too because of the new series. We ran into MikeOtt at "FSC-2010 Newark I" and Puppydog at "Bison Tube Hangout". Puppydog joined us for the brief hike to "Bird's Eye View".

After that, we headed out on I-95 and got a few more geocaches in Marcus Hook and Philadelphia before arriving in Philly Chinatown. Street parking was not a problem this time but that may be because it isn't free on a weekday. It's still cheaper than parking in a parking garage. The main purpose of this little trip into Chinatown was to stock up on produce and seafood, but we also had dinner at Banana Leaf. I hadn't tried this Malaysian restaurant yet because it opened 3 years ago, during a 5-year period in which I didn't go to Philly Chinatown, so I was surprised that they already knew me. Turns out that some of the servers and cooks at Banana Leaf came from the nearby Penang restaurant. Anyway, this time, we had curry mee with young tau foo, curried chicken with rice, and curry mixed vegetables with rice. After dinner, they provided a complimentary dessert. My impression of this restaurant is it's an improvement over Penang, both in terms of service and food. I'll definitely have to go back and try more of their dishes to form a more complete opinion.

Kangaroo Sculptures Sunny and 45-50°F. Went geocaching in Philadelphia this afternoon. This time, we targeted the area to the east of Center City. Had considerably better luck with parking compared to last weekend. I don't know if it was because the snow had melted, revealing more parking spaces, or if it was a Saturday. Only the last 3 geocaches took a bit of driving around to find a parking spot but once I found a parking space near some rowhouses, it was easy to walk to all 3 geocaches in the vicinity of Pennsylvania Hospital.

After that, I took advantage of PPA's free parking deal this weekend to park at the Autopark just one block from Chinatown. Very convenient! Didn't need the full 4 hours of free parking because we knew exactly what we wanted and were done rather quickly. Left Philadelphia and headed back to Delaware for dinner at Cici's Pizza. They were having a $3.99 buffet deal to celebrate their 25th anniversary. I had more pizza than I thought possible. I still think the dessert pizza (cinnamon apple) is pretty good.

Philadelphia Chinatown Sunny and 36°F. We thought it would be a good idea to go to Philadelphia Chinatown since it was Chinese New Year. Tried looking for some geocaches in the city on the way to Chinatown. The biggest stumbling block was not the geocaches themselves but finding parking. Streets in Philly were still a mess from the recent snowstorm and the street parking situation was pretty bad. There were still two geocaches I could do because those were near free parking lots. After giving up on street parking, we went to the PPA garage next to Independence Visitors Center to take advantage of the 4-hour free parking special. That was very convenient because there was a geocache, "Teaching the Travelers", right in the visitors center.

After leaving the visitors center, we walked a few blocks over to Jewelers' Row for the "Egyptian Jewels" cache. The GPS pointed to the wrong place. As we were poking at the snow pile, one of the jewelers came out of his store and told us where it was. Always great to get unexpected help. Then, without further ado, we went to the Chinatown area to shop for Asian groceries. (vegetables, sesame oil, soy milk, curry powder, and a few other items) Then we had a late lunch of curry mee with young tofu, java mee, and oyster omelette at Penang. We noticed another Malaysian restaurant nearby on Arch St., so we'll try that on our next visit to the area.

After leaving Chinatown, we went for another geocache on the way back to I-95. Fortunately, "Devil's spit", at the IKEA/Lowe's strip mall, wasn't obstructed in any way despite the 2 feet of snow piled up nearby.

Sunny and 38°F. Went geocaching in pretty much the same region as yesterday but closer towards Philadelphia. I went to Chester Township, Springfield, Upper Darby, Clifton Heights, Drexel Hill, and the Main Line today. None of the caches were difficult. "Phobia #9" was funny because of its location but I can't write more without spoiling the surprise. I also drove by the Target store that took the place of the Adam's Mark where Anthrocon was held for a number of years. Aside from the Target strip mall and the new buffet place, City Avenue looks pretty much the same as it did 5 years ago. And traffic is just as bad now too.

In the evening, I went to Spaghetti Warehouse in Philadelphia for the Cacher V. Food: A Pasta Eating Event geocaching event. This is an unusual restaurant. There's a barber chair in the reception area. Is that for when you get spaghetti and a haircut? Dinner and shave? The rest of the restaurant decor appears to be in the style of an old-fashioned train station. I'm glad they didn't take the "warehouse" part of the name literally or we'd be sitting on wooden crates and getting the food by forklift. Anyway, it was a good event, although maybe not as large as some geocaching events. I had spaghetti with meat sauce and Italian sausage. The food wasn't spectacular but the Wednesday spaghetti special was a decent deal.

At the end of the event, I asked for suggestions on Philly geocaches with easy parking at night. I did two of the suggested caches and added "95 North and South (Port Richmond)" since it was so close to the ramp I was going to take to get back onto I-95.

Rainy. 50-65°F. It's a far warmer day than yesterday. I prefer a cold dry day to a warm rainy day, but I'll make do. I was traveling to Newark, Delaware, to attend a geocaching event on Thursday. This time, I went down the Pennsylvania side via US-1 and I-95 instead of the NJ Turnpike. So I did a bunch of geocaches in Langhorne, Bensalem, and Northeast Philly along the way. I cherry-picked mostly geocaches that were close to the road or parking area so that I wouldn't have to walk in the rain too much. Even so, there was quite a variety of hiding styles. Only "Margaritaville Cache" required a walk of more than 500 feet. I did that one when the rain slowed to a drizzle and it was a nice walk around the lake.

Once I was reasonably done with Northeast Philly and tired of the rain, I hopped onto I-95 and made my way to Delaware. Checked in at Quality Inn. I remember this motel. It's the one I stayed overnight at 6 years ago whenever I went down to DC and Maryland. It's more motel-like than Sleep Inn because there is no internal corridor and all the rooms face outwards. It's now the cheapest motel along this road, according to Expedia.

After unpacking, I headed out again to do a Wawa run to get food for the evening. I saw a cache on the GPS map screen just across the intersection from the Wawa store and couldn't resist going for it. Went back to the motel and discovered to my dismay that the toilet wasn't flowing. So I got the plunger from the car and fixed it. What? Don't you all pack toilet plungers when you travel? :)

Cold day at around 40 to 45°F, but not intolerable. The weather forecast called for rain but it ended up just being cloudy.

Early in the day, I spent too much time on some geocaches involving longer walks. Those were worth doing, but I only had 7 finds when the sun set. Fortunately, there were 4 geocaches in Northeast Philadelphia that were doable at night.

Stepped on something disgusting that might have been left by a feral cat (or perhaps a feral human being) near one of the cache sites. It was dark so I didn't see it. Good thing the next cache site was near a Target store. I went in and washed my shoes in the restroom. I should've learnt my lesson from the poop episode in Bristol, but noooo.... I keep going back to that region.

Dinner was at Old Country Buffet in the Oxford Valley area. I've actually never been to that restaurant for dinner. It was interesting. I didn't eat that much by my usual buffet standards but I did try everything that looked interesting and I had enough fried fish and seafood patties to be satisfied. I also tried putting soft-serve ice cream in my coffee. I got the idea from someone else at the restaurant. That was the most creamy coffee I ever had! Also, I heard someone say "The cake is a lie" at the dessert table. Uh oh... video game catchphrases are leaking out into the real world! :)
