mortonfox: (chestnut husky)

On Sunday, I joined [livejournal.com profile] rapidtrabbit, [livejournal.com profile] freakylynx, Damian, [livejournal.com profile] foxwell, [livejournal.com profile] jappodawg, [livejournal.com profile] jimwolf24, Rez, Dreamwolf, and [livejournal.com profile] skyfirefox for Mascot Day at this Stony Brook Seawolves basketball game. The game was in the indoor sports center at the Stony Brook University campus in Long Island. Aside from our group, there were a few other mascots present: Sparky the Dragon in his NY Islanders colors and a polar bear mascot from WALK 97.5. Of course, Wolfie the Seawolves mascot was there too.

I planned for an 11am arrival, so I thought I was a little late. Then I found out that we were expected there at noon and the game only began at 2pm. The back entrance to the sports center was closed, so I brought my fursuit and stuff over to the front entrance. I started to ask the lady at the front desk where the mascot changing area was but Jimmy Wolf was there already so I just followed him down to our secret underground hideout. Actually, that was a press room that had been converted from a locker room, so we actually had our own restroom and showers! There was also a press conference table with microphones, so naturally, we had to play fursuit press conference. Yes, we have video and pictures, but not on my camera so I'll have to wait for someone to post those.

Then the spectators started arriving, so we went up to the front entrance to welcome them. I got into some group photos. Also played with some of the kids. Some of the kids were really playful, running around and chasing, putting their hats on the mascots, etc. But I noticed that some kids were quiet and just looked at me with an expression of semi-wonder, which meant that I had to try something random like peek-a-boo, shoulder pat, or nose touch. You can tell which kids are going to grow up introverts, although I'm one myself so I tried to give them a little more attention. And oh, among the people streaming into the building, one guy actually did identify my fursuit as a husky, which amazed me because people usually say I am a wolf or a (generic) dog. Or even a rabbit, which boggles the mind.

Then the game began, so we went to the arena area. I was up on the balcony sometimes, on the benches sometimes, and then down on the basketball court level for the rest of the game because I didn't feel like taking the stairs up again. The crowd wasn't that big. I think there were only a few hundred people watching the game and everyone was well-behaved. There was no tail-pulling or anything. There was a bunch of kids who were joking around with the mascots. One of them told me that one of the cheerleaders said she likes me and that I should go give her a hug. Okay, no biggie. I went and did that, and the cheerleader was all giggly in response. Then he said, no, it's that other girl. D'oh! :)

At half-time, all us mascots went out onto the basketball court to do a little show with Wolfie for his birthday. I wasn't sure what exactly we were supposed to do out there, so it was a bit random. There was a cake too.

After the basketball game, we went to the Lake Shore Diner on Route 347 on [livejournal.com profile] jbadger's suggestion. (over the phone) I knew where the diner was, so I drove in front and led the group there. We met up with [livejournal.com profile] jbadger at the diner. I had the leg of lamb dinner.

One more thing: The sports glasses that I ordered online last December worked great inside the fursuit head. On the lenses, there was somewhat of a tint, which I thought would make everything seem dark, but I was fine after a little while. The best part is the glasses didn't fog up, not even after I started sweating. Good anti-fog treatment there.

A swiper? heh, did anyone think you were a tiger? Your suit looked a little tony the tigerish. But hey, didn't at one of the events last year (St. Patrick's parade or maybe Kids Expo) someone thought you looked like a foxcoon?

Yep, I got called a tiger once, although thankfully not Tony :P

That's true - I've been called a foxcoon several times so far... when someone asks if I'm a fox or a raccoon, I can sometimes mime them to put the two together ;)

But this time was different, the first thing he said to me was 'Are you a foxcoon?' - I'll have to ask RTR about it, but since he was there and has told kids that I'm a foxcoon before (I don't mind at all, no worries RTR!), I suspect it's not from a knowledge of hybrids :)
