Rainy Day Household Projects
Oct. 15th, 2010 03:05 amRainy day and about 50°F. Since I stayed home, I tackled some of the long-neglected household chores. Scrubbed the mysterious pink rings in the bathtub. Then I vacuumed the living room carpet but found that I had to disassemble part of the vacuum cleaner because there was a clog deep inside the hose assembly.
In the afternoon, the mail, just a little soggy from the rain, arrived. One of the items in the mail was a refurbished Linksys WRT54GS2 V1 router. (the one that was on woot.com 2 weeks ago) So this evening, I went about installing DD-WRT firmware on it. This router only has enough memory for the micro version of DD-WRT but that's okay. There were only a few features that I wanted anyway. Installation was a tricky affair. It had to be flashed twice and the second time, I made a mistake with tftp. Fortunately, I was able to retry that after doing a hard reset. Once that was done, configuration was pretty straightforward. I was a bit concerned about reported overheating problems with low-profile Linksys routers such as this one, but I have it sitting on a riser now. Hopefully, that will help with air circulation.
Well, it turned out that I had to go out this evening anyway. I went to BJ's to get an 8-pack of CFLs for 99 cents. (plus a few other supplies) The special coupon for the CFLs is valid starting today and with a deal this good, I figured I should get a pack before it goes out of stock. So in total, I've replaced 18 bulbs in this house with CFLs. The only bulbs remaining are the ones with candelabra bases because I haven't yet found an inexpensive CFL version of those. The vanity lights in the bathroom look weird with CFLs because the round light bulbs were part of the design, but I suppose I could live with curly bulbs sticking out over the bathroom mirror.
