Penguin Plunge
Mar. 4th, 2007 12:33 amDid a mascot gig at the Penguin Plunge event in Middletown, CT, today.
Woke up early because it was at least two hours of driving to get there and I had to be there by 10am. I may actually have woken up too early because I had time to do 3 geocaches along the way. Then I drove to the Polish Falcon's Lodge mostly by memory because I've been there twice already. This year, volunteers had to register. I don't recall having to do that last year. However, I got a badge and a t-shirt. Same curtained-off changing area as the last time. Also in attendance for this gig were
cadpigjr,
coyoty,
foxwell,
freakylynx,
grizz593,
jbadger,
kazer,
logarthsheppy,
lowen_kind,
renegadehusky,
smrgol_t_kirin,
athauglas,
sparky_.
After changing, we went outside the lodge to interact with the crowd. We did the same "skit" as last year. We lined up with the other groups pretending to do the plunge. When our turn came, we ran out towards the lake. At the last moment, all but one of us stopped and turned back. This time,
foxwell took the plunge into the lake. The announcer was hip to the joke too, saying that it looked like someone didn't get the memo.
After the gig, we went to the Athenian II Diner in Middletown. I ordered the roast loin of pork, which resulted in my getting a big pile of pork chops. I think everyone else also got portions that were similarly large. It's amazing, although probably not the way I would eat every day.
Then I went geocaching with
jbadger and
smrgol_t_kirin. Did two geocaches with them and two more on my own before heading home. On my way home, there was a problem on Route 15 and traffic came to a standstill. Fortunately, I knew my way around and could detour through Wallingford to I-91. It's a pity because I wanted to see what the mountain tunnel on Route 15 looked like at night. Maybe next time.
